Well, that could have gone worse, but it certainly could have gone better, too.

Hmmm.

Well.

Just gotta hope I can get the Danes a stronghold or two they can work out of.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Are the Danes not making money from pillaging anymore?

Because they really should be, maybe not as much from cities, but it's their only real means of making money, and if they aren't bringing new troops from off-map, it should be perfectly fine.

You would say that, since you want to use them as a proxy-army to destroy all your enemies for you.

Squeegy, I want you to look at how many enemies I have. (Everyone)

I want you to look at how likely I am to succeed without the Danes. (Not)

Then I want you to rethink your statement, which was rather rude, actually, and unsporting.

No, what's unsporting is that you want to tip the balance in the favor of the NPC army because you don't actually have to face them. Just because you wouldn't be able to win without a deus ex machina doesn't mean that you should start pushing harder for one. You're not predestined to win this game, and you were given just as much of a chance as anyone else. We're all enemies with everyone else. Only one of us can win this game. But we're all playing by the rules. You relied on an entity that was beyond those rules to give you a leg up, and when that didn't work as well as you wanted it to, you now want to give it even more of an advantage over the rest of us so that you can coast on it to victory. That's rude.

Really? How did I rely on them? The Danes came as a challenge to all of us, the rules said we could pay them off to keep them from attacking us, and when they were in danger of not being an interesting threat anymore, and I was in danger of losing, we decided to work together as an alliance, just like if they were a PC army.

And yeah, I want to try and make sure my ally can have a chance to fight. I am trying to win. Trying to help my ally to do better is one way of trying to win, just like lemon10 is attacking me because I'm supporting the Danes, even though they aren't threats to him anymore. Everyone is only enemies with everyone else in the long run. In the short run, it's Wales and Pictland and Ireland and Wessex versus Mercia and the Danes. If you're going to get pissy about me making a statement about how I'm hoping that I can get the Danes to be actually fucking effective, when Wessex just finished off their batch and Ireland already slaughtered theirs, and I don't even know what's going on in Pictland, read the backstory leading up this point.

Look, I have nothing against you, but it's clear that you're using the Danes as a means to increase your power. You have no need to pay them, because you've never had to fight them and never will as long as we continue fighting them off. You're paying them so that they can weaken us as much as possible before we kick them to the curb. And that's fine. That's the situation NQT laid out and you took advantage of it as is your right. I have no problem with you allying with the Danes. But to petition the GM to make them even stronger because you're dissatisfied with how much they've weakened us? That is the very definition of unsporting, I'm practically sure you can find it in the dictionary. I'm appalled that you would even accuse me of that so hypocritically.

Lemon10 is using the game to his advantage just like you are. He's backing us because we're credible threats to you just like the Danes are credible threats to us. But he has never once tried to change or subvert the rules to give us a leg up against you. He is nothing but an honorable player. He even tried to keep you from quitting as soon as things went sour for you. Whereas you are getting quite pissy that you are losing, in a game where only one faction can win. The Danes are effective. They've captured two of my cities and halted my invasion of your lands. And to be honest, you definitely could have played your hand better and been in a much better position than you are now.

We're past the point in the game where we have win conditions we need to meet. This is a free-for-all. At some point I will have to go up against Ireland and Wessex even if we defeat you together, they know it, I know it. If you crush us with the Danes, then the game is over, because NQT is probably not just going to continue doing You vs. the Computer. Stop trying to Calvinball the strategy game. Be a better strategist if you're afraid of losing. I find your attempts to cheese the rest of us quite rude.

e: That's all I have to say on the matter. It's NQT's choice, I've said my piece.

Hey guys, be cool. I deliberately stopped the special rules for the Danes so it'd be a fairer challenge for everyone. It also means less admin work for me. I'd rather pose an interesting threat than mod-crush my way to victory. Even if the nations manage to beat the Danes, they'll still have to deal with one another. But I think the fight is by no means over: prognosis is good for the Danes to take Pictland, and maybe if my strategising is good they'll also win out in Wales... we shall see.

Anyway. This is going to be an interesting one I think. The Danes and I may end up swapping ends of Scotland at this rate. Or I may lose horribly. One of.

Well, I got a 50% chance of wiping out that Danish fleet now. It won't be free (and will cost anywhere from 2-15 ships), but either way, I now have enough ships to have regained complete control of the straits, and can finally send troops over to the mainland safely.
Kash: I find myself once again in need of wood. I am willing to trade you 7 iron and and 29 food for 99 wood.

Wow, you're getting a way better deal on wood from Kashyyk than I did from Varee.

Kash has 491 wood, Varee only has 13, it stands to reason that he sell more of it for a better price.
That said, I am willing to trade more resources for wood, but I only have 7 iron remaining at the moment.

Throwing a bump out there for Varee.

I also feel the need to point out that I am far more of a threat in the long term to everyone then the Danes at this point. With the Danes no longer able to get overseas reinforcements they have no way to threaten me, whereas my massive (and rapidly growing) armies can crush them (and every other player) quite easily in a straight battle. Unless something major changes (eg. everyone making peace to fight me), I am pretty certain that there is about 0% chance of anyone else winning the game.
I am going to ride into Mercia fairly soon and murder them, followed (eventually) by Wessex, then the other players.
