That's one of the things about this game, a lot can hang on a 50/50 random chance.

Spoiler: Ireland turn 72 (click to show/hide)
Well, the current Danish fleet could be out of my hair as soon as next turn, if everything goes according to plan of course.

Also: Yeah, I kind of with that battles were run at the end of the turn instead of the instant the armies run into each other for just that reason.

I think that moving into an army should prevent further movement on either army during that turn. Then, after all movement is finished, the battles should be run with whatever units are there at the end of the turn.

Those of you who play Mafia (or have considered doing so) might be interested to know I'll be running a mafia game with an RPG-like character creation system, Choose-Your-Own-Mafia. It's in sign-ups now. If you wanted to play you wouldn't have to jump through the usual prove-you're-not-flaky hoops, as you're all pretty dependable.

Argh. I can't play Mafia anymore. I tried, and it was just too stressful, and the mindset bled into my RL. When I had to take a brrak and managed to break out of it, I couldn't get back in. Just too much for me.

Mafia can be a bit intense sometimes, it's true.

Mafia doesn't interest me too much anymore. Looks like it's already full anyway. I'd be happy to have any of you guys in any of my games, though.

Afraid I'm not really on the computer enough currently to be able to play mafia properly.
I think that moving into an army should prevent further movement on either army during that turn. Then, after all movement is finished, the battles should be run with whatever units are there at the end of the turn.
The problem with that is that the player with calvary would be able to pin a pure infantry army of infinite size with only a single troop.

They can already stop an army of infinite size in its tracks by putting a single troop in its way. What makes that so much worse?

But I suppose the defending army could still move in the meantime, and will just be destroyed at the end of the turn. That might lead to a lot of canceling, though, if they get into more than one battle.

Nah, sign-ups are definitely still open (probably go to about 16 players max). I can understand why you'd be put off by vanilla mafia, though maybe it's worth pointing out that CYOM is a lot more tactical than a regular Mafia game, players have a lot of agency to play a role according to their personal style and preferences.

That's reasonable (though, if a player were so inclined, they could build a self-destructing jester role and cannon out of the game with a bang and body-count on D1).

Well, I used to like Mafia, but for some reason I can't bring myself to commit to anymore. I guess because it's too much of a party game. I like strategy games and RPGs because I can roleplay in them. It's a bit out of place in Mafia, because it's so heavily structured.

Not quite. Under current if the infinitely large infantry army sent a small vanguard ahead before the main body(read: make the order after you order the primary force) they could find and combat the skirmishing party of cavalry that would otherwise have delayed the main body of the army.

Of course, if siege engines are being taken along, it doesn't really matter, since they're so slow they're nearly useless. >.> I think  one of the only ways Siege Engines can be efficient is via ship.

Which, in some ways, makes sense. In others, not so much.

Ah, yeah I'm not usually a fan of party games; I play a lot boardgames and there's a certain kind of casual game which has too much randomness that really grates on me (Fluxx, Munchikin etc.). In building CYOM I kind of wanted to keep the hidden-alignments investigation game aspects of mafia, while allowing players huge flexibility in how they play the game.

Roleplaying is OK and encouraged in some mafia games more than others. I've done it a lot (I played the entirety of Toon Mafia in character, and that was fun because a lot of other players were doing the same.

Yeah, but even then most of the time it's more efficient to load up on cavalry so you can attack and then move your fleet in the same turn.
