Spoiler: Ireland turn 68 (click to show/hide)
Hurm. Things are looking pretty good for the foreseeable future.
And wow, pretty much everyone has already posted, I am almost last for a change.
E: Repelling the Danes is probably going to be fairly costly, and may even (temporarily) cost me a city (and possibly two), but it seems like it should be fairly easy (albeit expensive) to survive them.

Spoiler: 882 AD (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Danish invaders burn the ships in the harbour of Windermere as their ride escapes to reinforce the New York blockade. The Grand Irish Fleet heads north, perhaps to prevent Danes from landing on both shores. Across the bay, Mercia enters Castercliff and Whitehaven but their victory is tainted by the news of Birmingham's capture by the Welsh. The Welsh are blocked from taking back Almwch straight away by an influx of Danish immigrants shoring up the provisional defences, though their holdout seems unlikely to last.

In the south, the Bronze Horde march into Londinium but their comrades in Bore make the mistake of marching out into a horse trap. The first knight from the south-eastern reinforcements lands and the main bulk of ships sail ever closer to the shore. In the north, the Dane's north-east invasion force evades the Pictish flotilla by a sliver, landing safe in North Tor. But will they be enough to take on Causantin Mac Fergusa II?

Good timing Varee, I've taken your 50 gold: no conquering of Wessex land or entering their unconquered cities this turn.

Yuck. That turned out pretty badly (well, it hasn't, but it has the potential to turn out very badly), my fault I suppose for not having them move all the way through into the city.

Ugh.

I just feel like giving up at this point. Wales has so goddamned many fucking troops, and I have a 50/50(probably worse, actually) chance of losing one of my two capitals now.

There's just no way for me to catch up or keep up.

You shouldn't have aggressed me! I was told we had an uneasy truce, and then you just started wrecking my shit. So of course I fought back.

The Dark Age - Need More Wood, Milord - Turn 69

No, I'm not pissed about you fighting back. I'm pissed about the fact that Zanz made legions of Mounted Crossbows.

I aggressed you mostly because it was the only real option left me at that point to expand and continue helping the Danes. I really didn't want to fight Wales, if I could afford it, but if we're honest it would have happened at some point or another, and I was hoping the Danes would make enough of an impact for me to cage you in a bit.

Far worse. Your troops are significantly better (on average) in a 1v1 fight, but A) Its 12v11 B) You are attacking (so all his troops will get the charge/first attack) and C) He has a 50% defensive bonus.

You could overcome one of those, and possibly even two with your better troops, but not all three.

That said, its (far) too early to call it. If you can out tactics him and pick off his troops, and NQT sends enough danes south to keep his southern army pinned, then you have a pretty good chance.

To be honest, I don't think that attacking him and extending that far was the right decision. You would have been better served by assisting the danes in their fight against poor Varee, with your forces you could have ensured the Danes got a easy victory, and killed Varee by now. Of course, hes pretty much dead now, but with your assistance you probably could have ended their battle 5+ turns earlier.

Then you could have thrown in with the Wessex+Southwestern horde danes and probably beaten Wales with a simultaneous attack, or at the very least put a ton of pressure on him.
E: Or pushing northwards and attacking my+pictlands coastal holdings without attacking him. Zanz said that using your road to attack would have been war, but he isn't Zanz and would probably have let it slide.

Or you could have just left me alone for a couple more turns and built up your forces. If there was no threat to me that required me to learn how to use my armies, I probably wouldn't have gotten so much useful advice from lemon, and I would have just fumbled around not building troops or expanding cities until you came down on me with a larger force. My point is, it was a tactical and diplomatic blunder.

I attacked you when I thought you were gonna be Zanz >.>

And NQT was the one who suggested I start taking those upper cities, actually...

I still want to run one of these, eventually, probably east asia themed, the only problem is the amount of work required to do so and the necessity of trying to replicate China and surrounding lands circa. 9th or 13th centuries. Plus, without new graphical options and with the limitations imposed by the game engine(not Vanigo's fault, I just tend to come up with more and more ideas until I run up against the walls of what's possible, for things like this), I'm limited in my ability to change things.

Though there are nation specific units, and possibly buildings...which would make it rather fun, what with Mongols and Japanese and all. :D
