They'll engage. But remember each unit moves in turn, so if two armies both move through the same square so long as they end up in different places they'll have no chance of meeting.

Also remember that even a single unit can delay an infinitely large hostile army, as they have to stop do do battle.

Also, sorry about the invasion Kash, but there wasn't really anything else to do (besides build up forever) and I needed to strike before your navy got large enough that there would be a significant chance of a naval loss (which was possible now that you have 2 shipyards and a dock on the sea there).

It's fine. I was actually expecting you to invade me at the same time as the Danes, so I started building up a navy to defend against that. Guess it just forced you to act early instead :P

I'm aware its only been a day and a half, but I might as well give this a bump for Varee in an attempt to keep the momentum up.

Just a prod to nqt to remind him everyone has posted.
E: For what it's worth, I personally would prefer if the turns were run a bit faster even if it meant that we didn't get the blurb for every turn. I mean, the blurb is nice, but not worth delaying the game for a day.

Spoiler: 860 AD (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Faced with the might of the Irish, the Picts fled from the Narsis stronghold, displacing the Northumbrian remnants long settled on the island. The Picts had bigger fish to fry. King Causantin Mac Fergusa II himself along with the best men from the north in a generation were all riding south, slaughtering a small band of Mercian frog catchers that had tentatively planned a raid on the ill defended Haydon Bridge. The Bridge was now held by the Pict's own raiders and King Caustin II was set to take Richmond come the spring.

The ill-trained bowmen of Bridglington, shivering in the eastern marshes, were no match for the Mercian longbowmen who took their homes and captured the miserable tumble of dwellings that amounted to the Northumbrian stronghold. The southern theatre of war was not so uncomplicatedly victorious.

The cunning Egbert II, holed up in Winchester, had learned of the Mercians abroad in his lands.

"We need to kill Coenwulf!" he thundered, slamming his fist on the round table. His men hurrahed and raised their weapons.

"You have my lance!" cried Sir Kornfled, and his co-knights up-bellowed in agreement.

"My grace," advised Mogana, "if we ride on horseback, we are certain to run him through."

"Then ride we shall," said the King, "to arms!"

They rode out that very day, thundering across the downs and dales until the Mercian king's camp was in sight.

"...and then I said, 'that's no questing beast, that's my wife!'" finished off King Coenwulf, and his apothekaries obliging laughed.

"What's that— eck, ack," slurred one of King Coenwulf's honour guard as a crossbow bolt shot into his side. And then into the camp burst King Egbert II, finishing off the bolted man, and staring down his life foe.

"For Wessex!" cried Sir Kornfled at his side, as he rammed his lance deep into the stomach of the ageing King Coenwulf.

The remains of the King's guard and the best of the Nottingham and Richmond regiments tried in vain to beat off the sudden attack, but they were no match for the speed and ferocity of the west Saxons. Sir Kornfled wetted his lance a final time on the quivering apothekaries, before kneeling to his king.

"We have dealt the Mercian's a great blow today my men," said King Egbert II, "but those dogs have not yet been driven from our lands!"

Coenwulf's eldest son, Cynehelm, had unbenowingly become the king, though that claim would soon become contested by his ambitious uncle. The young King had moved with many loyal longbowmen to take the iron mines and cut off the Wessex supply. Though as long as the Welsh were giving tribute, Wessex would never be without fresh metal and horses.

By the winter of 860, Ceolwulf stood ready to seige the same city his own brother failed to take, a small garrison had been repelled from Nothingham, but several fine midland regiments had taken the ancient city of Londinium, held by the west saxons since their domination of the east saxons and Jutes half a century before.

Would the Mercian's regret leaving their heartland ill-defended against the Pictish insurgence? Would Wessex be able to repel the Mercian invaders? Would the damned Northumbrians ever just die? Would the Welsh move their substantial armies beyond their meagre range? And where would the Irish go next?
