Spoiler: 842 AD (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

Though the initial Welsh raiders were skewered by Wessex lancers, their continual reinforcements presented a tricky proposition for King Egbert, pressed as he was by the Mercians (though they too were enduring the assaults of the marauding Picts).

E: Craaaap. I just noticed I built a master blacksmith instead of a cavern mine in Irada on turn 27. Is there an chance at all that you would be willing to change it to a cavern mine?
Sorry lemon, it's a bit late now.

To be fair, Wessex only has to control Winchester to be victorious.  Right now, I'm sticking to the west of Winchester for my conquests, so I'm not threatening his win condition.

Yeah, I would probably be doing the same thing if I was him. Sitting in place and building a massive empire and army for 50 turns, only to have it do nothing is quite boring, despite it being the best strategy in the majority of cases.

You are threatening his win condition. He needs to survive, and whatever resources he has to divert to deal with you are resources he can't use to fight off Mercia. If he moves his army from there to defend his eastern flank you could probably take Winchester, which he can't allow, which leaves his other lands vulnerable to Mercia. Not that Mercia is really in the position to attack him at this moment, but if you continue your attack, it could cost him the game.

Right now, I am only planning on grabbing the areas west of Winchester so that I have a place to use population up effectively.  Even more so since I got that new city.

Bumb for kash and zanz.
Also, it's turn 29 now, not 28.

Spoiler: Battle Log (click to show/hide)

While the Northumbrians hastily fortified their desperate settlements, the Irish and Picts pressed harder. Great warbands continued to muster along the Pict-Mercian frontier, while Wessex moved to reclaim their southwestern outpost from the meddlesome Welsh, destroying many of ancient Dumnonii people in the process.

Remember, armies move in order of the slowest unit, so an all-infantry army will always go after an all-cavalry army.
