.40.01 Outside plants farming
« on: July 09, 2014, 07:19:35 pm »

Anyone else tried this yet?

I seem to be getting the full set of plants available, and not just the ones I've collected seeds for.

I've grown outdoor plants. I suspect it lists all plants available on the embark whether or not you have the seeds, kind of like belowground plants. Could also be related to the plants your civilization knows about.

I think it lists every plant you've ever tried to gather (say you tried to gather a single lentil bush, but were unsuccesfull, it'll still list lentils as a possible plant)

Actually, I'm not sure this is true. I just embarked on a new word, dug a 3x3 channel build a plot in there and another 3x3 plot above ground.

So the above ground plot lists red spinach even though I haven't collected any plants (nor does someurist have herbalist enabled).

More curiously the channeled plot (outside; above ground; light) lists both underground plants and red spinach.

Ok, here's the deal. I just did some quick testing. You have to put the farms IN the biome you gather the plants from. For example, I embarked on a mountain/forested area, and my plots on the mountain can't grow anything outside. However, the plot I built down in the valley to test this? Has a full list of everything. Clearly I am going to need to extend a giant platform of growing into that biome.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

I actually like this. I was curious if you would be able to just trade for any kind of seed and grow whatever you want which would make your fortresses that much less unique. But having that one fortress that exports potato wine and barley beer is kind of cool.

As for what's listed as available to be planted, I think it's always been like. I've come across this issue in previous versions several times as I make a lot of above ground crops. It's just more noticeable now since there's so many new plants to harvest.

That has always been the case in the previous version too that you can't plant things in biomes where they aren't native. It was just that nearly every plant in the last version was native to every biome except mountains, glaciers, and tundras. So you didn't notice it as often.

As for what shows up on the farm menu, I think "garden" plants and "crops" work differently -- something along the lines of "garden plants always show up. But crops you have to have gotten one of or attempted to gather it or something" ??

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
