Advice requested: Varied weapons
« on: July 09, 2014, 01:56:38 pm »

I was just wondering if anyone had been playing around with the weapons, considering the new [ATTACK_PREPARE_AND_RECOVER:A:B] token? I think it would be neat to have a mod with more specialised weapons, where they have different attack speeds, and therefore different advantages. I'm not used to balancing and using the arena etc. yet, so I thought I'd look for some advice.

Edit: Changed title & OP. Old title was "Request: Varied weapons"

I love this community. Somebody asks "hay guise how do i tame shark", and then everybody is like "why don't we fling sharks at things with complex mechanical devices?".

Not to sound hostile, but we tend to frown on requests in this board. If you really want a mod like this, you could do it yourself.

Oh, I didn't know, sorry. :/ I'll let this topic slowly die then. :)

The reason for looking down upon requests is because modding (especially weapon modding!) is so damn easy that you can learn it within an hour or two. Try it out!

I plan on doing this myself with my weapons and armour pack in an update, but I don't know the exact scaling of the [ATTACK_PREPARE_AND_RECOVER:A:B] tag (ie. just how slow would 8:8 be? How fast would 1:1 be?, or the significance of mismatched numbers like 4:2 or 5:3) and waiting on info for it.

Yeah, modding weapons is really easy. It's the balancing that's problematic. Apparently, the weapon speeds all get rounded to 1 attack per fort mode tick, so if you have some really slow weapons with powerful velocity modifiers to compensate for the lack of speed, those will be extremely overpowered in fortress mode.

Anyways, I've made some minor modifications to some weapons, just so that I can enjoy some variation. Let's let this topic die.

Your last statement is wrong though. They just strike faster than 1 tick, but it's not rounded, so fast weapons are still fast.

Yeah, I actually went into the arena and looked into it after I posted about it here, and you're correct. I guess balancing shouldn't really be more of an issue now than it was before the latest release, except getting it just right might be a little harder. I'll be doing some weapon modding for my mod, but testing it will be annoying.

Seeing as I've already started this topic, I might aswell go ahead and ask for some general advice about weapon modding. Which values are important for armor penetration? Which values would make a weapon easily penetrate skin, flesh, cloth and leather, but not metal & bones?

The only values that don't effect penetration are the [ATTACK_PREPARE_AND_RECOVER] values. And how well an attack penetrates metal and bone depends as much on the weapon material as it does the actual attack statistics. An adamantine axe chops up bronze colossi pretty well, but a copper one can't do jack. This is Dwarf Fortress: The only thing simple is failure. And even that gets absurd sometimes.

First number is the prepare time, second is the recover time. 8:8 is a damn long time. 1:1 is really fast.
