The party all arrive at the captain's quarters. It's surprisingly barren though the furniture is of decent quality.

"Ah... You're here. I owe each of you quite a bit for protecting my brother. I haven't forgotten about that. There is, however, a larger issue at hand. I trust that you noticed the fire on The Sheath?"

"Brother... Surely they'd be happier not knowing? It could be an isolated incident. There's no need to worry them. They're young. Surely the Hellhammers will deal with it when they hear?"

"They deserve to know. Comforting them won't make them feel better if our fears come to pass. Now then... The fire, you saw it yes?"

Eileen shudders. "Yes. It was quite large. I'm sure we all saw it."

[Nerjin]

The Captain seems to be pondering how to proceed. "How much do you know of the age of Dragon? I am given to understand that none of you have had a classical education?"

[Flying Dice]

"I may've had one in some of the oldest trades, but I'm thinking that's no what ye mean," Lora laughs.

"Age of Dragon? Hmmm?"

[K: History: 14+2] You don't know much aside from the fact that it was a period during which dragons ruled over all sapients. Eventually one was defeated by a group of warriors known as Hell... Something or other.

The Captain laughs, a sad and pitiful one unbeffitting the boisterous man, before he explains "Back then every sapient was ruled over by Dragons. They were numerous and powerful. Even the weakest dragon could destroy armies. However there were those who willingly served them. They were called Dragon Shamans. There were several orders of Dragon Shamans. One for each type of dragon. However, there was one Dragon Shaman more powerful than the rest. His name was Lanius. He possessed the power of each individual dragon and was their greatest servant. His defeat is shrouded in mystery but... What is known is that his soul was imprisoned."

Kyle raises his hand.
"... In a tea set?"

[Nerjin]

"We're not entirely certain. My order was tasked with guarding a Teapot containing a portion of his soul."

"No mortal instrument could contain his entire soul saavy?."

"Yes. The containers holding his soul were split up and dispensed across the lands. For many ages they've been kept seperate for fear of what would happen if someone was to gain possession of them... Well we know now."

What does Vicnan know about the power/importance of a soul? Knowledge: Arcana (+9), Religion (+9) and The Planes (+6).
Does Incarnum exist in this world? ((Magic of Incarnum says that a DC 10 Knowledge: Arcana check reveals that Incarnum users use soul energy. Vicnan has a +9 to his K:A roll, so it is a yes or no question, unless you rule Incarnum to be rare enough to merit a higher DC.))

"So your saying the erm... Beholder was it? Yeah, that he had the rest of the set of the shaman's soul? Or am I not catching onto that we should prevent the soul pieces being put together?"

[Nerjin]

"No. There are at least two other items still out there. I-"

"Brother Isotini means to say that we will be checking in on that. The problem being that mos' the crew might take t' being resentful of a lack o' loot n' plunder. So we be relying on-"

"Unsavory practices. We will be taking merchant ships as we travel. Gold and... plunder galore." the notion seemed to leave a foul taste in the Brother's mouth.

"Aye. Ne'er thought I'd say it but I'd be preferin that we skipped the looting. We might not have much time. If he gathers his full soul... Well..."

"We're not sure. But you saw what he was able to do with only three pieces of his soul. We fear he might try to resurrect dragons."

[K: Arcana: 5+9] During your 'apprenticeship' you've never known for your master to mention souls as a conduit of power. He, in fact, stated that a soul was more a construct of the mind and that those who 'transferred' their souls to other objects were, in actual fact, merely copying their minds into that object. The distinction seemed a bit like nit-picking to you though.

[K: Religion: 9+9] Religious texts he made you study, on the other hand, claimed that the soul was the only source of power for magical use. The soul is, they claim, your true self. The soul knows everything but is disrupted upon being placed inside of a living body. It spends its time there attempting to remember its true knowledge. You can't quite recall if there's a particular reason the soul chooses to inhabit a living body.

[K: The Planes: 18+6] Other religious documents, however, claimed that the soul was, in reality, fragments of the material plane as well as taking some form from other planes.Sentience was, according to these texts, a means for the planes to maintain a constantly growing pool of energy. Through sharing their essences the planes would be able to further evolve until they reached a perfect state. What such a state would look like is unknown however as the balance between the planes is constantly shifting it is entirely possible that the planes move between multiple 'perfect forms'. Dragons are considered to be the perfect sentient form as they contain the highest mixture of elemental essence.

[Incarnum] What? You must have inhaled far too much smoke on the island. Either that or too much idle time has dulled your mind. Either way you don't even know what that nonsensical word means.
