So, how long until .40 becomes "stable"?

First of all, thank you Toady an Threetoe for your great efforts!

But getting to the point: maybe I'm wrong, but this one seems like the buggiest major update in a while. Was the 2d to 3d one even more full of bugs? I wasn't around for that. Anyway, how long could it be estimated for 0.4 to become as stable as 0.34? Should we expect it to become as stable?

Six months. Don't start any huge forts until then. Just play around with world gen and adventure mode to get a feel for the changes.

As mentioned before, Toady works in cycles. Release, new bug fix, old bug fix, or something like that.
Since the DF2014 was release earlier as planned, this will surely take a few months, six months at the latest.

I'm guessing. We'll see.

If by stable, you mean as few crashes as the 0.34 version had, I don't think it'll be that long. Weeks to a couple months. Once that stability is there we should start seeing bugs instead of just crashing. But the crashing will be much faster to fix than 6 months!

Dunno, my fortress mode is pretty stable as it is. Maybe it's because my map doesn't have fliers, so no random people hitting trees or cliff walls, but everything works as it should and I can play on.

Crashing will end fairly soon. Bug-fixing much, much longer (though not necessarily slowly), and will probably make up the vast bulk of his efforts for a while, along with minor other things. And then he'll add some other things to polish the new version, like those things he said he didn't have time for.

That's the (basic) outline.

I meant mostly crashing, yeah. Other bugs are annoying, but the constant crashing is what makes the game unplayable. It would be great to have a lesss crashy game by august

Dunno, my fortress mode is pretty stable as it is. Maybe it's because my map doesn't have fliers, so no random people hitting trees or cliff walls, but everything works as it should and I can play on.

Dwarf mode isn't nearly as bad, probably because it hasn't changed all that much. You can't walk three spaces in adventure mode without breaking the game, though

I'd expect crashing to go down stages, so you should have a less crashy game within a few days even. It'll still crash, but less often.

I imagine the first patch will come out in the near future, and then we'll continue seeing patches for an unknown length of time.

It kind of depends on how things go, really. Within half a year does seem reasonable though.

On the mantis bug tracker there are a lot of reports coming daily (without counting the old bugs that are still there and that some new report are duplicate of them), so i can guess it will take time to get things under control and call it stable :

My biggest issue was the obvious corrupted save issue. However that seems to be resolved so I am just waiting for the next version to play seriously.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

I have literally the exact opposite experience. (It's rare that I get to earnestly use those words, so highlight!)

To me Adventure mode seems pretty stable (although I remain as of yet unable to claim a site ["I forgot my bold pronouncement…"]); and Fortress mode is a freak show ("You deign to save the game and reload? A pox upon you! A POX!").

Originally, it was planned for March 2013. So, it was actually really late. Just sayin'.
