It looks to me like the pathing calculation puts the same weight on climbing that it does on walking on the same Z-level, so dwarves climb trees (and then get stuck).  When the branches fall out of the tree, or something else happens, they fall and hit with the observed results.

I wish he'd made the climbing process a LITTLE more intensive than walking/using stairs - idle dwarves are now menaces to themselves (well, more than usual).

I'm new to succession forts in general, yes, but do all forts designed by multiple overseers inevitably degenerate into a body-filled labyrinth of chaos and despair like this? Or is this just a Battlefailed thing?

There isn't much middle ground between killed-by-dragon and never-seen-by-dragon.

On the up side, valuable training for doctors and climbing training for the dwarves, who will probably need it to escape whatever horrible thing that shows up.

oooh, I wonder if you could create a safe climbing column for climbing training? Like, a one tile chute with hatch covers at every level, so if they fall they don't fall far at all?

Something like this happened in the last version to me. I channeled a pit and tried using it as a garbage pit, which was a huge mistake. Because I channeled it, the dwarves would sometimes walk down the ramp INTO the pit to throw their garbage, while others would stand on the ledge and throw garbage in.

When dwarves threw their garbage in, it would periodically strike whoever was in the garbage pit and kill or maim them. It only happened a few times so I was confused what was happened until I mass dumped a layer of rock I dug up. Suddenly I had a fortress of dwarves throwing rocks into a pit swarming with dwarves, striking and killing a few which would make dwarves rush into the pit to rescue the injured... who would get hit by flying rocks, and need rescue. Dwarves died, fights broke out, insanities began.

Needless to say, this fortress was lost in a tantrum spiral.

I marked trees for chopping, and the wood cutter chops the tree from the TOP. He proceeds to fall two z-levels and get his leg pulped by falling logs. Then, to make matters worse, good ol' corrupted save paid me a visit.

I did not bring any axes with me, so I haven’t tried cutting down trees in this version. I haven’t seen my dwarves climbing trees yet either. However, in Heavymetal, I’ve had a similr type of incident happen with a giant thrips:

The giant thrips probably fell out of a tree. It was enough to rip off a wing and mangle the corpse.

I also have a missing "flame haunt” in my units list. Maybe there are trees growing down there, and the flame haunts are falling out of them?

You mean HFS? I thought so, except the flame haunt still shows up. I haven’t gone anywhere near that far down.

With the new 40.01 bugs, you may not have to.
Maybe its a baby flame haunt.

Dwarves also seem to love climbing up trees over ponds, then falling out of the tree into the pond, and drowning.

Just lost a whole migration wave to it when they decided the trees were the quickest way from the edge of the map to the fort.

Just finishing the first year and a second dwarf is 'missing' (the first, the expedition leader and head brewer was never found).

Trying to find a vampire, I just looked through all the dwarves thoughts & preferences but they all either say they 'slept without a proper room recently' or 'had trouble sleeping recently due to noise'. I was under the impression that vampires don't sleep.

Edit: Well a seige just showed up so I guess this fortress is toast anyway :D

I have yet to see a dorf even injured by a falling tree.  I've stopped even trying to keep the milling dorfs out of the way and just trusted to ... Armok.  Heck, I've even chopped down a few trees in frustration to try to get a stuck dorf out of them, and they've fallen a couple of levels without incident.

Yeah, the weird thing about this falling-damage bug is things are taking WAY more damage than they should from a fall of just a couple Z-levels.  It's like the birds and dwarves are being shot at the ground by a downward-pointing cannon or something.

River canyon embarks are FAR more difficult because of this. My dwarves are climbing the trees near the cliff, hanging from the branches, and then falling 15 z-levels to their inevitable demise. All the more reason to get these dwarves into a secured locked hole in the ground with an alert-activated burrow ASAP.

Also, the thrips probably just flew into the tree. Flying creatures don't handle the new trees well, and tend to smash themselves onto them as if they were sliding glass doors.
