Calender screen showing latest news
« on: July 08, 2014, 01:03:47 am »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So this is a lovely new screen! It's fast most of the time, so this feature idea really only applies to worlds with a huge population where it can take up to several minutes to go through a week.

Why not show some basic legends mode style text of current events? It lets us get a sense of what is going on in the world as we wait for it to reach the starting date!

Maybe traders, migrants, bypassers or prisioners could tell you what is going on in the world. Maybe other civs (or your own) can send you messengers to tell you important stuff, like, "Megabeast J attacked and destroyed the city of K and now is heading for your fort".
Prisioners may also tell you important information, like, say, when (if ever) is an attack coming, who is their general, where is their camp on, etc.

My second turn's unnoficial goal was to turn everyone into vampires, and it backfired so bad, I ended up making the fort a more efficient, safer and friendlier place.
Apparently they evolved a taste for everything I love and care about

I like the idea of something appearing under the calendar, but the player isn't supposed to be aware of these off-screen events in real time.

"On this day in history" is one possibility, or a tiny profile of a historical figure.

I think he's talking about the world progression calendar screen.

In a sense we don't need to know Urist mccarlington was born that day, but seeing: " the fort shineyjewel was invaded by goblinmcciv98 in the year 12. It was later reduced to ruin in the age of 14. " Giving players an idea of the world they are about to enter, and something NPC often know straight off hand.

Yes, that's what I meant, some text appearing under the world progression calendar.

I like darklord92's idea, but I'm not sure the game has a really good sense of what is a truly important historical event.  A few false positives won't hurt anyone.

These snippets could also occur on load and save screens (best if there are a few prepared ones so re-loads don't always have the same blurb).
