It's running two weeks of world gen before you start the fort.

Anyway, there are familiar domestic plants sprouting all over my map. Artichokes, spinach, string beans...

Dwarves have an unnatural tendency now to climb trees and fall out of them. Mine also have a bad habit of climbing around down inside the mouth of the volcano I embarked to. I'm about to lose my carpenter to dehydration because the frozen pool on the north side of the volcano is the only source of water available to me. I should have foreseen this. I may need to dig down to the lower cavern layers in search of water...

I'm feeling slightly uncomfortable with this whole 'climbing' thing in my fortress.

I don't like the idea of people things I chuck down my garbage pits being able to 'possibly' climb out again later.
Guess i'll just have to make them that much deeper to make sure everything breaks when it hits the bottom.

...or make the top narrower than the bottom..   stuff can't climb on ceilings yet, right?

What if you add a little overhang?

Just use smoothed stone, it is unclimbable.

Guys, not only did an owl explode mere minutes after embarking, but I accidentally dropped some miners down a hole and one lost it and screamed.

Amusingly the other one just dusted himself off and walked off like nothing happened, despite some of the dust turning mysteriously into magma spray.

I'm loving this new release with its new stuff, new plants, new trees, new exploding owls, but my FPS is crawling like its lower half had exploded in gore or something and it's only the second year.

EDIT: Okay, so it hit Late Winter and suddenly everything sped up. I suspect a horde of migrating cave things.

Stopping them from climbing out of a pit is simple: ring the top of the pit in smooth block walls.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

In other news, jumping is surprisingly not very complicated.

It's possible to hit clumps of root whilst digging underground. The elves will love this depot, I'm sure.

Okay, taking down a tree removes its roots. The elves will not know there was ever something strange about this depot.

Ooh, brew drink from fruit. Maybe I'll leave that cherry tree standing for now.

Cherry tree has fruited. No idea how to do anything with the cherries littering the floor. Saved without crashing!

I wonder how long it takes trees to grow back.
There is so much logs from one tree, but maybe trees need dozen or so years to regrow and be ready for chopping?

I had the same thought. I bet trees have much more realistic growth rates now so that although we may be able to get huge amounts of wood from clearing the embark, it will have to last ages while we wait for the clear cut to regrow.

I just reclaimed an NPC ruin and the instant I arrived demons started crawling out of the magma forges.

"Horrifying screams come from the darkness below!"

The candy spire hasn't even been breached yet.
