All the new stuff is fun, of course.

But I'm worried about how much slower the game is running for me. A noticeably lower speed.

I just pickpocketed a human hammerman, I think that hasnt been done before.

This confirms my suspicion that this would be the "steal everything update".

I reclaimed a fort, and while exploring realized that it went really, really deep (149 z-levels). After my three military dwarves ventured down to the depths, I get the message: "Horrifying screams come from the darkness below!" Sure enough there are a bunch of demons down in the lower rooms of the fortress (including some pigeon devils?). I guess this is the real reason the fortress fell, not some forgotten beast like was reported on embark...

I also really want to see a forest fire with the new trees. If anyone has done this already, please post a picture!

First autumn, I get a zombie siege, with the message "The enemy have come and are laying siege to the fortress" (possibly a bug?). Turns out there are only two elf zombies (and maybe a stealthy necromancer), and the corpses have names, so they seem to be corpses of historical figures, which is cool.

Edit: Yep, found the necromancer, a human clerk, which probably explains the human siege message.
Edit 2: The necromancer is overcome by terror. He climbed a tree, climbed back down, and is currently running away.

If I remember right, drunks used to be very, very common back in the day. No adventurer would go adventurin' without a few (dozen).

Others have commented on wood but no one has emphasized the magnitude of WOOD! When you embark on a heavily forested area and chop down the trees in like a 20x20 tile area you'll have like 600-1000 logs. And the best thing is the trees slice themselves up into conveniently sized logs!

Trees in caverns can also be absolutely huge, if the ceilings are high enough. I found lots of cavern trees growing in 7/7 water, I know this happened in .34 too, but now it kind of looks better because the tree just has its roots in the water but it grows in the air. Harvesting such trees would almost qualify as a stupid dwarf trick.

This sheer magnitude of wood changes things. On heavily forested maps you could easily eliminate your dependency on the magma sea, even when smelting heaps of steel. Also wooden items become cheaper than dirt (like literally, logs are so much quicker to cut down, than rocks are to dig up!).

edit: The other thing. Did some above ground herbalism. You get all sorts of gross sounding booze, like turnip beer or something.

I wonder how long it takes trees to grow back.
There is so much logs from one tree, but maybe trees need dozen or so years to regrow and be ready for chopping?
