Pigtails - Brewing and spawn

(This might not be Masterwork related, but since MW seems to change pigtails it might)

I haven't played Dwarf Fortress in quite some time, so I hope this will not be a stupid question... It seems that I have run out of pigtail spawns (seeds) and I'm really confused how that happened?!

I embarked with 20-30 pigtail spawns
I do a have a 5x5 unterground "all-year" farm-plot that once produced pigtails just fine
I'm now roughly in year 3 and for some reason I don't have any pigtails left und only 2 remaining pigtail spawns (The spawn may even have been from a merchant mixed seed-bag)

I don't understand where all my pigtails, or more importantly spawns vanished to:
* Up until now I don't create any thread/cloth/fiber
* Obviously pigftails can't be cooked/eaten, unlike plump helmets this can't be an issue
* Early on I had some issues with rotting/withering plump-helmets due to missing containers

Side-question:
You get plump helmet spawns/seeds by brewing plump helmets, how are pigtail spawn optained when they arn't brewable?

Um, pigtails can be brewed.  You can get spawns from either brewing or turning them into thread.  I believe everything other than cooking (including raw eating) produces seeds from plants.  And in Masterwork, pigtails are cookable (according to the manual).

Yeah, I guess you cooked them. You can disable that in the kitchen stocks menu.

Hmm, that actually might have been the case.
I was also confused because pigtails didn't show up in the kitchen screen, but I guess thats because I already ran out of them...

This happened to me too, except I don't even have a kitchen built. Is it possible they were eaten by vermin? Is there even a way to check?
