If there were, they'd be a surprise hidden deep within the RAWS.

There likely are no new creatures in the next version - Toady either explicitly said so, or said that he doesn't think so, I'm not sure which right now. Just (tons of) new plants. Major changes will probably come from gaits/the attack-move split. That would include hydras, for example.

This needs to happen.
The fact that there are animals that can climb makes it new.....I now have to redesign my entire fortress, the whole point of my entrance was they couldn't climb up the area around it and my archers could pick them off at will.

Well, the combat-movemement split is a pretty major change to everything, as is being able to jump and climb along with the gait stuff.

The dwarven brain got a massive overhaul and an increase of several magnitudes of complexity and depth.

I don't think theres any completely new creatures though, though there might be something with the new demon sites.

Jumping elephants!
Aggressive, jumping, climbing and burrowing elephants would be amazing.

I'm still not sure how the climbing and jumping mechanics work. I don't think animals will prioritize jumping and climbing over basic movement, so you probably won't random jumping elephants bouncing around like they're on a pogo stick. Then again, this is dwarf fortress, so toady might surprise me.

edit:

now that I thought about it, I wonder if toady made it so that creatures with no arms or legs cannot climb.

Toady strongly hinted in one of my topics (not trying to hijack) that there would indeed be at least one new creature; Elephant men.

And Giant Elephant (which would be what, sauropod sized?), you'd hear it's thundering footsteps long before you see it.
