This has probably been asked 1002-times, but I couldn't find the answere using google/wiki:

Are pressure-plates trriggerable by items landing/lying on them? :o

My recent forays into the use of pressure plates makes me thing no. The interface has triggered by water, magma, track, and creature. I am by no means well versed on their use though so take the above with a grain of salt. Just one mind you.

You're absolutely correct - items by themselves don't trigger plates. "Track" triggers check for a track vehicle (i.e. minecart) and _will_ take load into account if you specified a weight range.

A "creature" trigger only cares about the size of individual creatures present on top of it, ignoring their inventory - dwarfs carrying boulders will not trigger plates with a 200kg minimum threshold, although the boulder alone may already weigh more than that.

Nope. You have a choice of water, magma, track (which actually means minecart), and live creatures. It's entirely possible to have a pressure plate with a creature on it, and when the creature dies, the pressure plate will reset.
