He wasn't really central though. Could've had a minion do that for him, and have a CG of him toward the end or something.

It was good CG though. I had to really look before concluding that it wasn't a real person.

He really was, though. The movie was about Tarkin's bid for power by seizing control of the Death Star project as much as it was about explaining how the Rebel Alliance got the plans in the first place. Y'know, the reason he's the Imperial big-shot in charge of it back during A New Hope.

He was critical, but didn't have to be central. He's essentially a galactic leader, he doesn't need to do these things himself. A quick cameo at the end to show he was pulling the strings would suffice.

Heck, he essentially has the leash on Vader in IV.

Well, Vader killed him indirectly by siring the man who would kill Tarkin, then. :P

Nope to that As stated, Tarkin died when the Death Star blew up. Recall that the fleet commanders on the Death Star were boasting about how the senate had just been abolished and they now had free reign to do anything they like? Think about what that meant for Vader once the fleet commanders were also dead.

In the first movie, Vader is only shown in command of one ship, which is a "vanilla" Star Destroyer. And he's in charge of doing things like hunting down stolen plans and leading assaults on foot or in his personal fighter. That's not the kind of stuff an admiral does. After the Death Star blew up, he's shown acting as a de facto fleet admiral with a fancy flagship, and is finally able to kill his subordinate officers at will, rather than just strangling them "a little". He couldn't actually get away with stuff like that in the first movie.

Yeah, Vader's arc from 4 to 5 is that he suddenly has nobody to tell him what to do, so he seizes power by murdering anyone who disagrees.

And he really did intend that to be anyone who disagrees:
