Getting voted for when you're up against Trump doesn't really indicate anything in particular. If you were told to eat shit, or eat broken glass, and you choose to eat the shit, then shit would be "popular". It was an either/or choice.

Googling the term "clinton popularity poll" gave the first few links as showing that Clinton's personal numbers are below even Trump.

All positive responses are 36% for Trump and 30% for Clinton. That's the thing about popular/not-popular. Personally, i don't mind Clinton at all. But "popular" trumps what I think or you think, it's about what things like these polls actually show. I'd argue that things like the election are under duress, since if you didn't vote for Clinton, you get Trump. Elections only  report relative popularity. e.g. the election was only asking "who do you like better Clinton or Trump". Which, since both were deeply unpopular wasn't an endorsement for the popularity of either candidate.

Trump beat Clinton, but he also beat all the REAL Republican nominees.  Despite the GOP's every effort, including their pocket news programs.  Clinton was the wrong candidate for an election where the electorate swung for desperate populism.

And still she got more votes than any white male, apparently?  Nice.

 I'll bet you that the raw popularity of a lot of people he beat was higher than him. But the problem was that all of them represented the establishment/mainstream side of GOP politics, so they split their vote between them, while he was the lone maverick candidate coming in, and picked up all the votes from disenfranchised republicans.

It's a standard spoiler effect / first-past-the-post thing, where everyone ends up with a specific person even though hardly anyone wanted them as their first pick.

If you have three establishment candidates, with 24% support each, and one maverick candidate, with 28% support, then the maverick beats all of the establishment candidates. In terms of individual popularity, only 28% rated him positively, however, each of the establishment candidates could have up to 72% popularity, but because there were three of them, they split the vote.

Sadly, the person with the #1 popularity in politics is Bernie Sanders, but that might be partly because of how the election played out. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but a double-edged sword. If Bernie had won the primaries, then beaten Trump, you can bet that tons of people would be complaining about how the Bernie Bros stole the election from Hillary, rather than how he beat Trump.
