The "Hideako Anno hates the fans" point is actually more of a creepypasta theory than something he actually said. What he actually said which is the basis of that quote is taken out of context. The context was basically "mainstream Japan sucks, you see businessmen on the trains reading comics and porn. Back in the good old days, men were men". And who he blames for the decline is the post-war US occupation of Japan which infantilized Japanese males. So it's basically a crochety old fart pining for the good old days of fascism "before the war", and his disdain was for mainstream Japan as a whole, not any particular subculture or his own fans.

However, it is true what they say about the hair/eye color scheme. It was basically random. The character artist came up with the look of blue hair girl (oh that's right, Rei) because he liked some Jrock song called "the girl with white bandages", and he basically drew the same girl from his own manga, except with the bandages. She had brown hair. Anno liked it and used it in the show, except since Red hair girl already had red hair, he asked for a contrasting color scheme, so the guy just inverted the colors. There is no great theory behind any of the NGE shit, it's all random shit people threw together.

Trying to read some deep meaning into what Anno made, is in fact just as wanky bullshit as "which girl is better".

Also btw, Gainax is also known for pioneering a method of boob-bounce animation now known as "gainaxing" and a little after NGE they sold Rei/Asuka porn in the form of a NGE strip mahjongg video game (Gainax also made video games in house) as well as pervy artbooks of Rei/Asuka. Basically they started as pervy fan artists who created their own studio, and stayed pervy the whole time. There is no commentary on pervy Otaku, those guys were pervy otaku.

Actually, there's probably a lot of truth in this: Gainax came out of a generation of guys who were fan-art creators (e.g. comiket artists) in the early/mid 80s. So e.g. they were fanart/comic creators when stuff like Macross was big.

So while there was e.g. unofficial Macross porn, by the time Gainax had their "big hit" they pioneered official NGE porn (pervy artbooks and in-house video games where you strip the NGE girls). So my guess is that the only reason Anno would be upset about unofficial NGE porn is that it cut into the sales of official NGE porn.

There were basically no major anime franchises that had the amount of officially-created smut associated with them before NGE came along. e.g. Ranma, Dragonball, Macross, Sailor Moon. You don't find official books of nude drawings of the female characters for any of those series, but you do for NGE.

So rather than being "dismayed" by the sexualization of his "pure and chaste" anime characters, Anno was the flag-bearer for ramping that shit up.

XKCD is pretty consistently good, with lots of gems, but today's was so relevant to my recent stress that I laughed out loud: https://xkcd.com/1894/
Statistically, I guess a lot of XKCD strips are surprisingly relevant to a sizeable minority of people that day.  I'm one of today's lucky 10,000!

My cat will sometimes whine for more treats, even if there's already treats in his bowl. I've discovered that I can just shake the closed container over his treat bowl and he'll be satisfied.

Heh, mine would often do that with regular food even.  I guess they don't want to eat anything that's been still too long, but stirring it is like a promise that it's still good.

Sometimes when I try a new brand of catfood, my cats will show me they don't like it by digging in it as if they were burying a turd in litterbox gravel.

Ive always assumed when they do that theyre searching for the good food. Theyll get over it, or theyll go feed themselves. :P

But shaking it does create more interest in it, yeah. Shaking means food, whatever you put in the dish must be dinner, otherwise you wouldnt have shaken it, right?

There's something rather amusing about BBC comments at times.

"Labour's shit!" "They'll ruin the economy!" "They have no experience!"

Headline says Labour is preparing for if they get into power.

"Oh my God Labour are idiots they shouldn't need to prepare unless they're going to fail!"

If they prepare, people call them idiots for preparing. If they didn't prepare, people would probably call them idiots for not preparing. This coming from people that oftentimes espouse how they're just being intelligent with their choices.
It's almost as if people aren't monolithic hiveminds.

I shared this pun to a vegan group on Facebook, and whilst most folks loved it there were a couple of people, presumably devout religious types, who actually took offence.
That's probably even funnier than the image was to begin with. :))

The best way to take apart shitty books.

Then again, they're apparently so bad the disassembly almost does itself.

I've started watching the author's commentary video series on Gunnerkrigg Court. This is what happens when he starts rambling.
