More on topic, I've (re-)started reading Slacktivist's commentary on the Left Behind books. Mocks the likes of Jack Chick from a perspective of a liberal evangelical Christian. Fun read.

Went to church yesterday with my family.

Was brutally reminded why I try to avoid going to church.

Well, nothing bad per se, it's just... The message the priest was telling everyone did not sit particularly well with me. Y'see, I happen to genuinely enjoy living.

Nope. It was soemthing like this...
"If a murderer shows up in your house with a gun to kill you, you should totally feed him and give him drink and the best bed and wait until he wakes up, and then let him kill you. Cause, you know, Jesus did that."
The problem with using Jesus as a basis here is that Jesus is, well, God and as such unkillable, as proven by him rising from the dead. So yeah.

Turn the Other Cheek is about not taking revenge and about the virtue of peace over hostility... It was meant as the counter to "an eye for an eye".

It wasn't about how self-defense is a bad thing.

Jesus wasn't arrested by a bunch of murderers, he was arrested by guards who were doing their job which was absolutely necessary. Jesus at no point met a murderer who was out for his blood.
