The Lost Tech - Elephant Pump?
« on: June 30, 2014, 10:55:53 pm »

While reading through Boatmurdered chronicles I've stumbled upon a mention of elephant pump technology (page 206 of PDF version). Is anyone actually familiar with how to set it up and running? Or is it merely a failed ambitious project?

I believe that was just a silly way of talking about threatening the elephant menace with magma.

If I remember correctly, they had set up a corridor with pressure plates that the elephants would try to path through.  Only, pathing over one set of plates closed one end of the tunnel and opened the other end, so the elephants kept walking back and forth, triggering some mechanism or other.

This may be the first known instance of dwarfputing! A creature logic repeater!

Thx! Must try!

I do this all the time, but with a spear trap in the middle (since they jam less) and with hatch covers on each end. It's really handy.

Speaking of Boatmurdered, I remember there was a doomsday lever that the last player couldnt find. Anyone knows what did this lever do?

Pressure plates were from the 3D version, so I don't think this is right...

I figured it was just a joke, because they had so many elephants that they were "swimming" in elephants. No such thing was ever implemented in-game.

Looking through the archives, I found this post:

Well diary, I've had enough of it here. I feel like a failure. The project sits almost completed, but not quite; it feels like when I wouldn't quite have my papers done for one of my old professors, only the outright-fail-asshole kind of professor, not the oh-well-you-lose-a-letter-grade sort. This place is dirty and foul, not at all like the loving utopia I hoped to craft. I shall leave instructions to whomever comes after on the functioning of the project. Here is a crude sketch of it:

The only mention of an "elephant pump" comes from the next player. It sounds like they were indeed trying to get an elephant to walk back and forth over a pressure plate to continually activate... something. Most likely the magma blaster.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

The only thing that "isn't right" is you - pressure plates have always been a thing in Dwarf Fortress, though they weren't nearly as versatile back then (they were only triggered by hostile units or unconscious civ members, and "single-use" was toggled from the Add Job menu rather than set at build time).

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Oh right, sorry getting this mixed up with fluids triggering them... Ignore my comments above.
