Yes, pretty much the Canadian patriot act.
I did a quick read of the bill's wikipedia page, and it is almost nightmare fuel o_o. I'll quote the site for this:

Quote from: wikipedia
Part one enacts the Security of Canada Information Sharing Act, which authorizes the disclosure of information throughout and within the government of Canada regarding activities that “undermine” Canadian security.

Part two enacts the Secure Air Travel Act, which creates listing mechanisms and prohibitions for persons who may pose a threat to air transportation or who may travel abroad to commit terrorism offences.

Part three makes significant amendments to the Criminal Code including criminalization of the expression of ideas related to terrorism.

Part four expands the mandate of CSIS to operate both inside and outside of Canada (also in conjunction with Bill C-44) and to operate in a more active manner, as opposed to its previously passive information collection role, and also allows the agency to conduct illegal activities with judicial approval.

Part five relates to amendments to immigration security certificate legislation allowing, in part, the government to withhold information from the specially appointed, national security approved Special Advocates retained to represent a detained person in confidential and
closed national security hearings.

Pretty much every part have potential for abuse, but I'm mostly concerned about part 3 for it's potential to restrain freedom of speech, and 4 because it allows them to ignore human rights.
Another thing of note is that they can arrest people they suspect "may" commit terrorist acts before they commit any crimes. Combined with their very loose definition of terrorism, this gives them a massive potential for abuse.

Why I'm sure that with the outstanding reputation of police in today's media no abuse would ever occur!

Oh wait.

Blarg!  We should be reducing copyright lengths, not extending them.   >:(

So basically a big middle finger from our prime minister -_-
At this point I'm convinced that each of his actions are designed to piss of as much people as possible. In other words, Steven Harper is a cartoon villain. Next step for him is to steal candies from babies and kick puppies.

I live in a fairly safe Liberal area (yay FPTP  ::)) so I feel fairly safe voting Green, that it wont hand the Conservatives my seat.

I've stopped considering Trudeau as an option for me to vote when he showed support for the C-51 bill. I'd probably vote green too, but I'm afraid that it would end up helping the conservatives, so I'll probably vote NPD, unless I learn that they are jerks or something.

I always vote green.  The theory being that you can't get into politics unless you are corrupt, so the party with almost no chance of getting in probably has the most integrity.   :P

(Also I like their policies).

I wish we had the single-transferable vote system, it would solve a lot of problems.  Namely you can vote for who you believe in AND vote strategically at the same time.

Alberta election just hapened/is hapening/whatever. It seems that the PC government, after 44 fucking years, is no longer a thing and the NDP now has a majority government. I am cautiously optimistic about this.

I'd imagine King Harper is a bit concerned that the NDP took over his heartland, but fortunately for him he doesn't have to worry about running against anyone as convincing as Notley. Instead, he only has to beat the world's least substantial candidate and a fellow that managed to transform the federal NDP from a wildly successful populist opposition party into a party that spends its time quibbling over parliamentary procedure.

I'm still not sure whether to waste my vote on the NDP or to vote my conscience and support the local Marxist Leninists.

I'm just as surprised as you. O_o
But at the same time Harper did such a good job at being hated by everyone that it's not that surprising that everyone want him out.

speaking of getting hated, did you guys hear about the fact that he compromised the safety of soldiers for an advertising campaign recently? I saw that on the news yesterday.

Albertans, I like your style you crazy bastards.   :P

(now BC can has green party?)

Edit: ALSO.  As much as I can't stand Harper, he has done one thing that benefits me personally so I'll give him credit for that.

Thank you Mr. Harper for the increased limits on my TFSA.  Early retirement will be that much easier for me now.

Edit 2:  So it sounds like Albertan's will be getting a 15 dollar per hour minimum wage out of all of this.  I'll be interested to see how that all turns out(I suspect it will be amazing).

Nice!  Lets hope they actually keep their promises (I'm normally a bit skeptical, but since this is such a big turnaround they might have too)

One of my province's main political party is getting a new leader today. It will most likely be the guy who owns all of the local media I mentioned earlier in this thread. I'll edit this post when I know who won.

@Levi: Apparently lobbying used to be a good thing. It's pretty obvious now that whatever advantages it might give are no longer worth the massive amount of corruption it allows.

@LordSlowpoke: I wouldn't know for sure, but trying to stop corporations from manipulating parties will most likely receive a massive amount of opposition from them. I'd be very surprised if the npd even attempt it, but that might be just me being cynical.
