It took you several days. On the ways you crossed many a unit going to reinforce the front, singing patriotic tunes under the guidance of their heavily armed NKVD chaperone. Many more men streamed in the other directions, bloody traitors that managed to get their unit defeated at the front.

The local population, at least those that survived the Nazi occupation and the NKVD purge of collaborators generally welcome you during the day, but during the night the moujiks are afraid of your faintly glowing horses, some of them taking you for ghosts. You have to use all your power of persuasion and the threats of your guns to get room and board.

Finally, you reach the front at the small town of Volchansk. Here the front line is held by the 170th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 57th Guards Rifle Division. Opposing you is the 39th Infantry Division, a unit raised largely from Poles and other non-Germans.

The local commander has been warned of your arrival, and you could go see him for intelligence or equipment. Alternatively, you could try the frontline immediately, or choose another spot for crossing.*

((Depending on what intelligence the local commander gives us this could change, but as a preliminary I would suggest using the nearby river to sneak our way up to Belgorod and liberate it while the Nazi's concentrate on pushing away from there, then take Tomarovka by surprise as well. This would result in the local Nazi offensive being surrounded and cut off from its supply lines, theoretically making them easier targets.

Granted, said offensive is probably all tanks, so it might be a smart plan to wait for them to "return to base" in said captured towns and spring an ambush, preferably with a shitton of mines. Then we could launch our own offensive.
