Also for later use when I said Staff/spear I meant it like a staff with a pointed bottom end for stabbing.
I was sort of thinking of a crystalline quarter staff with sharpened ends.
Basically but I was thinking the top would be blunt(ish it is crystal) for bludgeoning/non-lethal combat.

Ustris knew two things the  moment he entered the cave.  The first was that he was correct and that there was water in the cave, the second is that the cave wasn't natural.  They had entered a massive tunnel, "Hallway," he corrected himself.  Every surface inside the cave was smoothed, with small alcoves on the walls where light was emanating forth.  Echoing off the walls was the sound of dripping, which assured him he was on the right path.

   "Ustris, what is this place?"

"Nothing that I expected, that's for certain."

   "Should we press forward?"

"It's either that or go back outside and wait for our death.  Stay close, we don't know what to expect."

The cool air in the cave was a welcome change, even if the entire place set off every alarm in Ustris' body.  His hair had stood up on his neck the moment he had entered the "cave," his senses straining themselves to hear noises that weren't there.  Nothing about this place made sense, why would anyone have created such a useless place out in the middle of a mountain in the middle of a massive desert, where the mountain itself should have been destroyed by the restless winds.   He advanced slowly down the hallway, trying to keep his footfalls soft.  He unsheathed the belt knife at his waist and kept it close to his forearm, his muscles tense to jump at the slightest provocation.

Kleine could sense the pure tension radiating from her companion and decided to trust in his instincts.  She withdrew her own belt knife and kept watch of the rear, Ustris would alert her to anything approaching ahead.  Both kept the silence, the tension within the strange hallway was palpable, and both had the feeling that they were being watched.  As they progressed further in the sound of dripping water became louder, the echoes beckoning them further in.

"Careful, there's a rather steep drop ahead."

Kleine jumped, Ustris' voice being the first thing she had heard in hours aside from the dripping and their footfalls.  In front of her spanned a massive room, one which could have easily encompassed Rikuroa.  The ceiling appeared to climb forever towards the heavens, and she realized that it had to be the sides of the mountain they were in.  Someone had purposefully and meticulously dug out the entirety of the mountain, after which they had smoothed the walls to a finer smoother finish than she had ever seen.  There was slightly more light in here than the hallway previous, and she realized that there was a hole in the ceiling letting down the sun from it's noon-time zenith.

"Ustris, do you have any idea what's going on?"

Ustris was too busy looking downwards to hear her, he had found the source of the dripping sound.  They were standing on a ledge approximately fifty meters above possibly the most beautiful sight in his life.  There was a cloud of fog resting on the bottom of the canyon, that could be the only word for it.  Occasionally he could see the tops of buildings peeking out from beneath their blanket.

   "Ustris?"

He snapped out of his reverie, "Sorry, this is as much a mystery to you as it is to me.  The water is collecting on the under side of the ledge we're on and dripping down there.  We need to find a way down."

"You want to go into that?!"

"I can hear the water dripping down there, I'm thirsty, and I don't want to walk through that hallway again.  I don't think whatever's watching us would like us going back for the others, either."

"... You mean you felt it too?  You could've told me!"

"It wouldnt've helped, I can still feel it even now.  I feel... I feel like whatever is watching us is examining us.  I don't feel any malice in it, just... curiosity.  Come on, I'd like to fill our water skins, and I have a need to know what's beneath that fog."

Ustris pointed towards a staircase a couple of meters along the ledge and they began to descend.  Ustris began to relax, his adrenaline had worn down over the course of the walk earlier and his body was aching for food and water.  Kleine was in the same shape, but she knew complaining about it would do them no good.  They both had some travel rations left, but both water skins had been depleted yesterday even with strict water rationing.  The climb down the staircase wasn't long, but about halfway down it became treacherous.  They had entered the area covered by the fog and condensation was forming on everything, making sure footing near impossible in their boots that had been worn down by weeks trekking in the sand.  Eventually Kleine removed her boots and stuffed them in her travel bag she carried underneath her cloak.  Ustris followed suit not too long afterwards, and the both of them progressed in silence.

The duo reached the bottom of the stairwell some time later, fog obscuring their view from practically everything, as they exited the stairwell Ustris noticed the floor changed subtly.  Instead of everything being completely flat and smooth, small channels ran in intricate patterns along everywhere he walked.  The buildings he saw earlier were also etched with the same intricate patterns, but if they were any sort of script or language it was one he had never seen before.  The fog was dense enough to the point where he couldn't see more than four meters in front of himself, and he could swear there were shapes moving within the mist, but he could never hear footsteps or anything other than the rhythmic dripping.  A cursory peek within the buildings proved most of them to be libraries, shelves upon shelves of books within each of them.  Books were rare on Acheron, most people didn't have the time to read them, let alone make them.

Ustris picked up a couple of the books and rifled through them, their script was different than any he had seen, though that wasn't saying too much.  He had seen at least three languages in his life, being sold or brought to different cities and races during his life as a slave.  Still, he could tell that something was strange with these books, he was already getting damp from being down here, and all of these books were bone dry.  He realized he had been looking at books and wondering about things that were probably magical, instead of looking for water, and belated himself silently then resumed his search for enough water to fill the water skins.

Kleine had been awestruck since they had entered the abandoned city, she didn't have the experience that Ustris had, she knew she was years younger than he was and she had never been outside of the arid lands to see this much water in one place.  She had fallen down a human-built well once, and subsequently nearly drowned, but this was entirely outside of her experience.  She occasionally stepped in one of the small channels running along the streets that had filled with water, which sent chills down her spine.  She had never imagined anything could be so... Cold!

"Kleine, does the floor seem slanted to you?"

OOC:  Well I found out how to tab, it's to create all of this in an RTF beforehand and just paste it in. :P

That's a possibility, we'll think about it when the time comes.  Weapons and armor are going to have a pretty unique effect, to say the least.  It shouldn't be too much longer before we get some cool exposition along.

Also, just wanted to thank you two for playing along, even though it's pretty railroad-ey right now. :P  Sorry I couldn't find a different way to not write a freaking book before the game actually starts. >_>

Say something sarcastically, Kleine!

If the channel is filled with water, drink a little!

Don't worry. I'm guilty of spending waaay too long avoiding the plot, and the players in my RtD seem to actively avoid getting on with it, especially when something in the game is trying to get them to leave a room.

"We're in a massive, lost city that doesn't make any sense, and you're worried about the floor being slanted?  You have the weirdest priorities Ustris.  I can see some of the water running through these channels beneath our feet, it'd have to be slanted to do that.  Or magic."

   "Hmm...  Let's follow the flow."

With that, the two of them began following the rivulets to what Ustris thought to be the center of the city.  Occasionally they would stoop at a crossing of the rivulets where they'd stop the flow long enough to build up some water.  It wasn't much, but it was enough to take off the edge.  The fog was ever-present, never once dissipating or even slightly lightening up.  The buildings loomed out of the fog in uniform patterns, never more than a couple of meters away from each other.  Soon the sound of water burbling became louder than, and soon they both found that water began pooling up around their path.  They continued walking onwards, eventually the water had risen to their ankles when Ustris called to Kleine.

"Throw me your waterskin, there's enough here to begin filling them."

"Oh, of course... Ustris, what do you think the purpose of this place is?  I can't think of any reason why someone would build a city down here."  Kleine had been somewhat scatter-brained.  She had never seen this much water in one place, this many new experiences in one day had a sort of sensory overload on her.

"I don't know, all that I know is everything seems to be drawing us into the center of this city.  I'm curious to see what's in the very middle, even if it's just more water."  Ustris put action to his words and began wading towards the center.

Kleine realized she was just as curious and began following him, this entire place seemed to have been drawing them in since they had spotted it back in Rikuroa.  As they waded through, the water continued rising, slowly up their legs, to their knees, and finally to Kleine's waist.

"How much longer do you think we'll be going for?"

"It can't be muc- there!  What's that?"

   "What, what did you see?"

"Some sort of glint... Nothing that should be down here."

Ustris began with renewed vigor, wading faster and deeper into the water.  Kleine hurried to catch up to him, the water higher on her and slowing her down.  She didn't have to chase after him long however, Ustris stopped hurrying not too long after he saw the glint.  For once, the fog parted.  A large dome shaped object rose out of the water, impossibly white, and somehow still gleaming.  The moment Ustris caught sight of he, he froze impossibly still.  Kleine stopped next to Ustris, noticing the strange look on Ustris face, but she was still looking around.  That's when she noticed that the fog was being pushed away from the dome, it was still as present as ever, it just wouln't touch it.

"I can't believe it...  All of this..."

   "What, what is it?"

"There's only one type of metal that even looks like that.  This entire thing is made of mithril."

   "Mithril?"

"An extremely coveted metal, it's extremely acceptable to magic.  If any of us found even a handful of the stuff in the mountains we would've been fed for the next year, even if we hadn't worked.  A Skrellit would sell his family off for enough to get a sword."

"But what is all of it doing here?"

"I can't even imagine..."  Ustris began slowly moving towards it.  "What in the Gods is this entire place?"  He reached out a hand to touch the mithril, mesmerized by the brilliant white orb.  When his foot didn't land on anything, he didn't even think to yell out.  He sunk instantly beneath the surface of the water.

"Ustris!?"  Kleine ran after him.  She had time to let out a yelp when her foot didn't touch the bottom.  She began sinking, trying desperately to swim upwards, but she had never been in enough water to learn, and sunk too.

OOC:  So the only thing that's been weird writing this stuff insofar is that I keep trying to type in Urist instead of Ustris.

Welp! Only one thing to do now, since it appears they cannot swim. Try to get to each other and pray for an opening on the bottom of the dome or something.

Yeah, there'll be more.  Just got back from getting my oil changed and eating.

Thanks for the compliment, good to know I'm doing well.  Just need to change the first post to something better, but I suck at straight on narrator.

Kleine woke retching, her body expelling the water she swallowed on her way down.  Wherever down here was, the ground beneath her was bone dry and gravelly.  She pulled herself up to her feet, panting and rocking unsteadily as her body tried to right itself.

"Ustris, where are you?"  She looked about frantically, finding a soggy bundle close to her.  She ran over to find that it was indeed him, unconscious, but faintly alive.  She made him sit up and started pounding on his back.  Ustris woke with a start and began coughing violently, scrambling away to retch for a moment.

"We're al-cough- alive?  How is that possible?"

"I'm as confused as you are."

"You're alive simply because I wanted you to be."

Both turned towards the voice, finally taking account of their surroundings.  Kleine saw the throne and the figure on it, but her attention was drawn to the wall behind it.  There, buried within - or more accurately, a part of the wall itself - a gigantic creature loomed over the entire room.  It first seemed humanoid, its' face distinctly so, but it seemed that everything below the neck became a giant shell, which had fused with the wall itself.  Finding where the creature ended and the walls began was an impossible task.  Following the walls around, she noticed that they were made completely of the mithril earlier, and the ceiling arced away into a dome.  The room was almost as large as the one they were previously in.

"Are... Are we inside the mithril dome we saw!?  That's impossible, it wasn't nearly this large outside!"

Ustris hadn't heard her, he hadn't even seen the creature or the walls.  All he saw was the giant sitting upon the throne.  In all aspects except for height, he was human.  The Giant had long white hair, and a straight beard that flowed down his chest all the way to his waist.  He was clad only in a pair of extremely ornate pants, gilt with more of the mithril that had stunned him earlier.  If the giant would stand, Ustris guessed that he'd probably be seven meters tall, possibly more.  At his right was a sword more perfectly forged than any he had seen before, the blade completely white, there was no crossguard and something strange was carved into the pommel, though he couldn't see it clearly enough from this distance.  Ustris couldn't stop himself from gazing into the eyes of this giant, he had no pupils, and his irises were in the shape of a serpent eating its' own tail.  Ustris knew immediately that this was what had pulled them here, there was no mistaking it.  This giant had power, and they were at his mercy.

"Who are you, why did you bring us here!?"

"You may call me Gilgamesh, and currently you are in the presence of a God."

Kleine's attention snapped back to the seated giant. "You, a God?  I've seen traders more grand than you!  You're also a human!  What God would ever take the form of a human?!  We're slaves to every other race, the creature in the wall would make a better God than you!"

"So the humans are slaves now..."  he stroked his beard absently, "That would mean a great deal of time has passed...  A great deal indeed..."

Kleine looked ready to begin yelling again, but Ustris grabbed her hand and shook his head.  'Not yet,' he mouthed to her.  He turned to Gilgamesh, "If you're a God, then you have a Champion, or a Shard of Heaven at the least."

Gilgamesh shook his head briefly, apparently he had forgotten they were in the room.  "I do have a Champion.  He's in a bit of a sorry state currently.  You see, he's been converted into my prison that I've been stuck in for the past... Well apparently it's been a few millennia."

Both mortals were taken aback, they were inside this God's Champion?  "... Alright, let's say for a moment, that you are a God -"

   "I am."

"Right, you said you wanted us alive, why would you want that?"

"A God is a sorry sight without a Champion that can actively provide them with energy, and while my current Champion is very good at his job, he's not exactly doing anything besides keeping me here."

   "Champions provide Gods energy?"

"Oh, yes.  Why else did you think we even had them?"

Both humans looked at each other, confusedly.  "To spread your word, and have people follow you."

"A side effect mostly.  Champions have a symbiotic link to their Gods through the Shards of Heaven bestowed upon them.  The Shards in turn provide the ability for Champions to grow beyond their physical and mental limits.  Gods never directly siphon energy either, we feed off of the extra power generated by your actions within the world."

"You're saying that as long as a Champion is doing... well, anything, the God is profiting?"

"Precisely, anything except imprisoning your own God that is."

"Then why do you want us?  We're not Champions."

"No."  Gilgamesh bared his teeth in a parody of a smile.  "Not yet you aren't."

OOC:  This episode brought to you by The Protomen, who kept me company for most of the writing.  It is impossible to find a good combination of text effects for someone who is to be a main character, especially to make sure they're visible.  (I really wanted to use White with a Black glow, but I don't think that's exactly visible in default theme)

Please note that I'm bad a complementing people so if I'm not criticizing you yet still posting then you're doing a good job. If I am criticizing you that means I actually care enough to try and help you improve even though your writing got slightly messed up in some way.

Heh, it's fine.  I just don't get my ego stroked often, so it's good to know that people are watching.

EDIT:  I realize the transition's not really explained, and Gilgamesh himself is very absent-minded and doesn't explain much except about the Champions, that's all sort of designed.  I'm not really sure if we'll cover it or not (because things get pretty hectic momentarily), so I might just throw out a post about how they actually ended up where they are.

I have!  Most everything said by a person currently is bolded.

Throw in some variation of "Not yet? Then you're intending for us to be, yes?".

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Write-up to be done soon.™  I've been in unwritten territory since they entered the city, so it'll take me a bit.

EDIT:  I suddenly remembered that Giglamesh posted in here.  No, he wasn't named after Gig, no matter how fun that would've been.  I had actually named him three days ago or something. >_>  Away I go, back to typing!

For all of his height and bulk, Gilgamesh could move extremely fast.  In a blur of motion he had moved behind the throne and climbed halfway up the wall, or did he jump there?  In one swift motion he had flipped his sword in his hand and jammed it directly into the creature, approximately where the heart would be.  The creature's head twitched suddenly, but no more movement came.  Gilgamesh sliced open the chest of the creature, widening the wound to roughly a meter across.  He threw his sword casually away, where it flew gracefully and stuck itself point down back into it's position next to the throne.  A slow ichor began oozing from the wound inflicted upon the wall, which Gilgamesh ignored and thrust his hand inside it's chest.

The pair of mortals had been stunned into silence, Ustris had thought briefly at one point of fighting this... monster, if it had meant his survival.  He realized now it would have been useless, Gilgamesh's speed and power was extraordinary even against the stories of Champions.  He was shaken out of his reverie when he heard that Gilgamesh across the room.

"At this point, I'm a might too weak to form another Shard.  They require an absurd amount of energy to create.  Never could find a way to create them with less energy, the ones I tried were practically useless.  Limited potential, weak augments, everything about them was just inferior.  One thing I did that others didn't is that I gambled my entire reserve of energy on one Shard once.  I put the Shard in my best friend.  Greatest moment of my life.  Greatest Champion I ever had.  Got me back to my previous self in less than a decade, better than that even.  Took over the world in less than a human lifespan.  Afterwards, he gathered all of the knowledge in the world into a single city.  Preserved all of the knowledge there to stay in pristine condition even if someone tried to burn it."

"What are you-"  Kleine started, Ustris place his hand over her mouth.  She glared at him and he put a finger to his lips.  Gilgamesh hadn't realized he was rambling, and Ustris had the distinct feeling that this was going to be the most they were going to get from him for now.

"He did that for me.  Not because I asked him to - wouldn'tve done that anyway - but solely because he felt like he needed to repay me.  Gods have a certain affinity, warmongers and peacemakers, Gods of Commerce and Knowledge, you name it they're part of it.  I was one of those who hungered for Knowledge, always needing more of- Ah here we go."  Gilgamesh had grabbed hold of something deep inside the creature's chest, his arm up to his shoulder was inside the creature.  He began pulling and audible snapping could be heard from within the wall.

"Thing is, he gathered too much knowledge.  None was left for us to find here, none to slake our thirst.  He came to share my obsession with it.  So I did what none of the other Gods had done, I created a new god and left.  Flew away from this hellhole - I have to find out its' new name - and left to gather knowledge around the universe itself.  Eventually found myself on a small planet, third from its star.  Sol was the star's name, I think.  Unique people, great culture.  Somehow imagined a couple of Gods themselves, accidentally got myself worshipped there too once.  Brought a couple of back.  It takes a lot of energy to fly around the universe, had to meet with my Champion to restore myself.  Happens to a God when he hasn't had a recharge in too long.  Have to go corporeal and wait for it to funnel back.  Sadly, my best friend had a powerful curse placed on him, made him practically dead but still alive.  He had been turned into a trap by the very God I made.  Left me to rot in here, cut me off from the heavens and thought I'd die pretty soon.  He's probably dead himself, probably shunned the humans I ended up molding my mortal form after."

With a final, mighty rip, Gilgamesh ripped what he had been after for the entire time out of the chest of the creature.  In his hands was a gleaming crystal, unmistakably a Shard of Heaven.  It had been fused with the heart of the creature that was entirely made of mithril, and he had ripped it out with only a couple of minutes of effort.

"Right, where was I?  Oh yes.  You two.  Sh'toll"

With that word of power, chains appeared from out of the ground and bound both of the humans standing awestruck, suddenly forcing both of them to a kneeling position.

"Both of you will be my Champions.  I can sense the malice you both have towards the other races, therefore I will bestow upon you my power from an age more ancient than these pretenders in my place.  Truthfully I would've taken the first thing that had wandered in here, had it even been a mouse, but this works out the best for all of us."

"What if we don't want to be your Champions?!"  Kleine stared defiantly at him.  Ustris shot a glance at her, his attention fully devoted towards the Shard finally within his reach, and this extremely mad God.  Ustris had noticed that the Shard of Heaven was in the same shape as Gilgamesh's eyes, a serpent eating it's own tail.  That all but proved that Gilgamesh was a God as he said, Shards took on the shape of their God's unique symbol.

"My dear, my feisty dear, you don't have a choice."  With that, he snapped the Shard into two halves.  "Brace yourselves, this is the part where it hurts." He thrust the Shards into the hearts of both humans.

OOC:  Fun times ahead!  Soon, combat, soon afterwards Freeedooooooooom!  Railroading is hard, y'know?  (Also, this is probably the most gore-y I'm going to get into this.  I know some people are squeamish so I promise we're not going to go rooting around in people's chests from now on.)

EDIT: Going to take a short break, explanations on Shards next.
