Then there comes Imperial Armour and various other random pieces of rules and footnotes in lore, and suddenly you have to keep track of "very flat, very round, vaguely ursine-like" aliens that move giantic ships by their physic powers.

Holius Fuckicus It'sicus Eating Fredicus
But this is the imperium, where Fredicus is probably a real name. So it'd probably be "Holius Fuckicus It'sicus Eating Fredicusicus"

Tyranids kind of defy our conception of species because of their directed evolution. Whenever they find an improvement, most if not all bioforms attain that improvement, hence the universal chitin and such.

That said, individual Tyranids can be massively different from one another. They might all be genetically identical and just have different activation, or they could all be genetically diverse to search for positive mutations.

It's just impossible to say, and it verges dangerously on the taxonomic black hole of making infinite divisions in-between categories to classify all comers more directly.

Nids can also evolve on their own as individual creatures if they get disconnected from the hive mind, also. Thats apparently what catachan devils are, anyway.
