Games workshop is a terrifying company. Was AoS a one-off thing to "revitalize" a product line that wasn't selling as well? Or was it the canary in the coal mines?
It is the one and only time I've seen disconnected stockholders defend the artistic integrity of a company against the people actually working for it.
I'm looking around for info on this. I'm seeing articles by a certain Richard Beddard, is that what you mean? Or are there transcripts of GW meetings?

1. Yes, sauce this please.

2. When companies make dramatic changes in new directions, it usually means something is going on. My guess would be it's new blood on the team that wants and eventually argued for (due to sales) a new vision instead of being shackled to the lore constraints of the literal Old World. I'm guessing there is a pragmatic reason for it too. I think they're trying to redefine the scope of WHF a bit so they can repackage figs and boxed sets according to new guidelines. Maybe less "drop $300 to $500 and field a couple hundred figs" to "drop $100 and start playing for realsies." You don't effectively end support for people's long built armies and figs without a reason. With the announcement that they're doing specialist games again, my hope is that GWS is coming around, maybe, finally, to the idea that less is more. Smaller but more frequent transactions vs. larger but more infrequent transactions. Which I think is a good thing, because to me they've been stuck in the 80s and 90s era mentality of hobby games for way too long. On the other hand, it sucks for the Old World and it could very well suck for 40k if they decide to mess with it. I dunno though. Anecdotally I bet 40k is still way way more popular than Fantasy. I remember when I started with Fantasy and was crazy for it, and the minute I saw 40k I went "Well this is about 10,000x more Edge Lord. Seeya Fantasy."

Finally caved in and started building an IG army. I think I'll be primarily going for a mechanized force, even though it will be a while until I get some chimeras and hellhounds. At the moment I have a command squad and a single infantry squad, but at some point in the next week I'll be getting the SC boxes, which will give me two commissars, two leman russes, two more squads, and two heavy weapon teams, which I will temporarily turn into four.
Anyone have any general advice for either army comp or building/painting? I think I'll end up going with a desert theme, and I'm currently looking at the Afrika Korps for inspiration.

I would regret even the loss of the Tau if Geedubs went Full Potato, which sadly is totally in the cards. I know we're doing it as a joke, but if you ever want to strike fear into your heart look up some of the transcripts of stockholder meetings they've had. It is the one and only time I've seen disconnected stockholders defend the artistic integrity of a company against the people actually working for it.
Could I possibly request links to these transcripts?

I know we've moved on a bit from the AoS discussion, but it occurred to me there's a rules aspect from AoS I'd really like to see in 40k.

The unit tokens. Stuff like DEATHRATTLE or WIZARD. I think they'd be really useful for making formations more modular and able to support later additions to armies without needing rewritten. As an example, I'm sure some of us know that Helbrutes, the chaos dreadnought, are terrible but can be sort of salvaged by some of their formations. Well I think it'd be really cool if rather than calling for the Helbrute unit the formations instead called for CHAOS and DREADNOUGHT tokens that would be possessed by Helbrutes, Ferrus Infernums, Chaos Contemptors and Sonic Dreadnoughts. I'd really love to be able to slot FW models into GW formations, it would open up a lot of build options for units that are normally shelved and possibly give some of the weaker armies a leg up.

I mean. Kroot aren't exactly known for their majestic aesthetics. Most of them, anyway. I'm sure there's some out there that ate enough artists or somethin'.

E: Speaking of which, do we know what happens when kroot nom on ethereals? I can't remember if that's a thing addressed or not.

Kroot are forbidden to eat Tau of any kind. Part of the arrangement the bulk of their species have with the Empire, though in theory some of the wandering unaffiliated bands might do so anyway.

I suspect the latter would be hunted down and killed by the Tau though, even if the wandering Kroot only ate lower caste Tau. They're willing to sacrifice countless lower castes to other species in the interests of protecting the Empire, but they take a dim view on them being eaten or mutilated.

If they knew the Kroot bands were eating Tau, odds are the Tau would tell the Shapers to go fuckin' deal with that bullshit over there. Police your own, damnit.

Kroot bands do not answer to each others Shapers. A group outside the Tau's auxillaries would have no reason to listen to a Shaper in service to the Empire.

Beyond all that, weren't the kroot pretty conflicty before they got GG'd? Surely at some point some of them had a light snack.

Mostly just curious if it was mentioned at some point, though. Iirc there's bits in the novels about what happens to kroot that regularly munch on, say, orkz or eldar or whathaveyou, so the question is how far that coverage extends.
