Was reading the Grey Knights omnibus in which there's fleet combat, and they specifically say 'The Imperial fleet considers ramming to be a suicide course'.
Then again, Ben Counter don't know jack.

I mean, in every bit of 40k lore about space combat I've ever read, ramming is a suicide attack. A "sir we're heavily outnumbered, the ship has suffered critical damage and the Space Marines need time" kind of thing. AFAIK, it's not standard Imperial Navy tactics to shoot then ram the enemy. That's Ork behavior.

I think Battlefleet Gothic paints a fairly extreme picture of space combat for the sake of gameplay. Imperial Ships have heavily armored prows to present the most armor on the narrowest profile during an approach. It helps for ramming but it's not the reason it exists.

A long time ago, Imperium used this Ironclad ships - they lacked void shields and a lot of smaller weapons in favour of shittons of plating and one huge gun running through the whole ship, or even more shittons of armour, which turned them into... basically darts, used to ram through enemy ships. They are ridiculously rare, rarer than actual battleships because nobody really knows how to make them anymore.

I belive ramming is a viable tactic, but most commanders still preffer shooting the shit out of enemy rather than ramming the shit out of enemy. It's just there, it exists, it can happen, you can consider it, but it's not like they ram the enemy every battle because it's something that's considered a better option than shooting the enemy.

Is not like the ram manouver is overly easy for imperial commanders either. In the board game you must pass a leadership tests first, the lore behind it sayss it represents the captain not only making the rigth calculations that are hard as fuck with space ships moving very fast and very far from each other, but also somehow convincing the crew to stick to the plan instead of simplu saying "lol nope".
If I have a single complain about the computer game next to release is that it seems that ramming is overly easy to acomplish and it will become standard tactic for everyone.

I'm curious as to how a tank would evolve. Would it climb out of the primordial ooze wiggling it's track-nubs, feeding on smaller jeeps before crawling onto the shore having evolved proper treds?
My ship exploded midflight, but all the shrapnel totally landed on Alpha Centauri before anyone else did.  Bow before me world leaders!

Holy Throne of Terra on rollerskates, this is the most amazing vidya experience I had yet this year. It's glorious. Every battle is challenging and GLORIOUS. I just rammed a battlecruiser into submission by using two light cruisers going at opposite sides of it in desperate maneuver because the guy was running away and I didin't had a chance to outgun him before he does, but then it was like ALL AHEAD GO GET THIS FUCKER and then he exploded into pieces. Also fucking Cobra torpedo runs on full speed until the last second when they pull an extreme turn to not become another big torpedo, this is the kind of stuff I always imagined when I read about space combat in Wh40k... this... this game is exactly how I thought it would be, and it's so good I am afraid it's heretical because Slannesh is getting stronger from all this pleasure. I admit I killed like maybe three actual enemy ships (not escorts) because running away in this game actually has a fucking purpose, like, people don't want to lose ships. And sometimes it happens because morale. Aaaaaand... fuck Orks, they are the only faction I have trouble facing because I literally have no fucking idea what to do... and that's not a bad thing because that's literally what they are meant to be.

Also the voice acting is hilarious, as usual with Wh40k games. The Commissar is the best one, he sounds like he covers everything around him in saliva every second word due to how much ham he tries to put into what he says.

TL;DR
Battlefleet Gothic: Armada is a-fucking-mazing.

I don't have the physical copies. I do have most, if not all of the stuff they had up on the website up until they removed all the specialist games stuff relatively recently.

I'm also looking for opponents to play with via VASSAL, if anyone's interested.

Yeah...once the Tau mods/DLC/Eastern Rim expansion pack (probably have 'Nids in it too, my other favorite Gothic race) come out, I'm sure I'll do that.

Easy? Well, actually... I feel like the ships have some kind of auto-pilot that tries it's darnest to avoid other ships so you actually have to "babysit" the ramming ship, but yeah there is no system that will actually stop you from doing that, except maybe the enemy shotting off your engines. It's basically doing a quick turn into enemy side and then going at full forward. It is pretty easy, but you usually don't have any real reason to since ramming isin't some kind of wonder maneuver unless there is huge weight difference between ships or you use it in interesting ways, like ramming an enemy to get in on collision course with another enemy, since the damage isin't actually that great for the cost of similar amount of your own HP... of course unless you are Orks since it seems Orks have some great bonuses to that because they just keep ramming using the fucking escorts and get away with it.

My main problem with the game right now is that upgrades and levels are apparently not counted in to point cost of ships, so if you just start you can go with your 1st level empty ships against maxed out enemies (with abilities like plasma bombs, all the stuff) with crazy upgrades, and belive me, it makes a difference since those upgrades are very powerful.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, it's actually real fun if you accept that you aren't going to actually win matches and rather focus on smaller tasks like taking out one enemy ship and then running the fuck away or something. I feel this game has some real good grounds for Multiplayer grand campaigns.

Eh, I'm not going to lie, there is some ramming almost every battle but it's usually accidental and usually it's just some shitty escort bouncing off (and exploding, escorts die super-fast if you touch them) the prow of bigger ships.

Speaking of escorts - I had the idea of running a battle with ridiculous amount of Cobras, and every non-Cobra ship equipped with Imperial Navy favour that lets you call in a Cobra every three minutes (yeah, favours are really stronk but also expensive), and then saturate the whole map with torpedoes. Bonus points for all the stealth upgrades on Cobras, so it's basically walls of fire out of nowhere. I haven't tried it yet and I expect that, like every troll tactic, it will either succeed in glorious way or fail miserably.

Well, I live in the country this article it's about. I guess you could draw a lot of conclusions from there.

I'm however, called an idiot for almost everyone else for trying to keep it honest. I do own most if not all games I play or have played in the past. As a software developer myself the regret is too big. :D

EDIT: Btw for some reason I heard the whole song, 14 minutes and 44 seconds of it. :D

Anyway, well, God-Emperor bless you man. Also the song is pretty cool, I guess, so that might be the reason. :P
I belive you can find current version of BFG:A on kat.cr, but be wary as the game has pretty decent system requirements and takes AGES to load. If you can download it, that is.
