Stonesense Overlay - Much work to do
« on: June 23, 2014, 06:59:27 am »

Since DF can be played with Stonesense when using dfhack r5, I thought it would be a good idea to start working on porting Stonesense to Masterwork, or the other way around. All modded objects, creatures, plants, inorganics lack graphics.

Lets start with the current Stonesense errorlog:
Code: [Select]
[DFHack]# stonesense

And here the link to the manual, on how to add stuff to Stonesense.

That being said, I will not work on this. But I wish other interested people, that know or want to learn how Stonesense .xml files work, and want to design new sprites, best of luck.

In the meantime I will continue modding on my end. :)

Luckily, it looks like a great many of these errors are coming from items culled by material simplification.  I'll go through and comment out the stuff it's not finding and post them as code spoilers here later once I get these cleaned up.  I can do that much to help at least.

UPDATE:

Here are the stonesense files to update to eliminate the missing item references, trying to post them as code segments blew past the character limit.  I left all of the commented lines in the files so the line numbers should all match for where the comments were inserted to eliminate the previous errors from missing item types.  The only one I couldn't track down yet was the 'RABBIT' one, but I'll take that as a challenge.

SECOND UPDATE:

There was a missing </variant> for the 'RABBIT' in caravan_animals.xml.  Fixed and re-uploaded.  That should fix pretty much everything except some odd file access error for a few of the modified files that does not seem to affect things that I can tell.  Note there is no modified artwork with this, but hopefully it'll help as a springing off point for folks that can actually draw.

UPDATE NOTE:
I will try and keep the link to my current progress on this listed here to keep it from getting buried in the post.

Current release (update #7 adding gnomes, orcs and warlocks):

Thank you. :)

You did do this on default settings I guess? Because I assume that the errorlogs came from the removed items, that can be added back with the GUI, if you play without "Simple Stone, Stimple Gems, etc". In the end I will have to add tags for the GUI to Stonesense as well, to toggle these entries together with the raw entries. Which gets super confusing once you have a save with simple mats, and a save without simple mats.  :-\

This was with default settings, yes.  It does look like there are a few terrain types missing for things such as archeology stuff and the simplified grass, but I figured getting rid of the wall of red error text with the default configuration to start was a decent idea.

Next thing would be the color/sprites for grass. Currently it looks white, and it takes up most of the screen. I think doing inorganics is easy, because the sprites are similar/the same, just using different color schemes.

The new modded plants and creatures require some more effort, especially the profession sprites for the new playable races.

Not sure, maybe it has something to do with the odd bit with the files not all wanting to load.  Though the only grasses which I think were not triggering the errors were the 'DOWNY GRASS', 'EYEBALL' and 'CAVE MOSS' ones.  There does not appear to be a 'GRASS' or 'BLUE MOSS' defined and the cave moss appears kind of brownish.

Unfortunately it's turning midnight here and I have to work in the morning, so I'll not get back to this until tomorrow night at the earliest.  Thanks for your help and your mod.

UPDATE:

Managed to at least get the grass to be green again and dug up some of the modified names given to some grass types (BUBBLE_BULBS2 and WORMY_TENDRILS2 as examples).  Kind of afraid to push forward too much farther on this given my minimal XML experience, but I guess the worst that happens is !FUN! and backtracking. Updated the linked file so we can at least get away from the white grass.  Though my blue moss and blue fungus are still brown.

Am making steady progress on getting the 128 x128 pixel set that was bundled with stonesense converted over to support masterwork.  I am trying to make a quasi-standard way of compiling these files together so it can be easily repeated across all of the civs.  I think kobolds are going to be my first victims, though I am making one big weapons file for use with all of the civs first to account for all of the variations of weapons and shields I found in the raws before I dig into that and I am roughly half done. I'll be honest, my art skills are not great, but somebody can take this to it later once I get it roughed out.

For some reason the dwarves keep showing up as phobeus or character versions when I try using 128x dwarves.  I am thinking maybe I have the wrong creature ID, but I'll get the floppy eared ones in decent shape first.  I'll package it up once that's together.

Update:

I figured out what was messing with the 128x dwarves and I have a first cut at a compiled weapons and shield set merged into the x128 set (200+ total items).  It should work for kobolds and dwarves to show the wielded weapon for military members.  I need to figure out how to nest variants a bit better because I would like to also show the gear on hunters, woodcutters, rangers and miners without making the file size explode too much.

Am going to have to go back and add the non-military armor variants for the gloves and torso equip gear for the added masterwork stuff, but at least I figured that much out before I had a groan worthy moment later.

Uploaded version 4 to the update post and here as well:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/s/vn0dorbrnmyumez/modified_stonesense_update_4.7z

Please let me know if I am missing any weapons or shields.  I think I got them all, but I'm probably short a few.

I am not one to usually bump a post, but modifying the post does not apparently flag it as updated when I posted the update. Guess I make new posts when I upload updates.

Also noted that civ werewolves do not appear to have skin or eye colors defined outside of their description (that or I'm messing it up somehow).  I do not mind trying to hard coding them reddish brown like their description, but then it would just be broken later when that gets added.  Going to proceed under the assumption that they'll have a less hard coded variation in the future.  (e.g. I pretty much have decent ones built while I was trying to test the portability of this tiling scheme).

Posting of update #5.

This release includes both dwarves and kobolds with at minimum placeholder graphics (using rough equivalents from the existing sets).  I have disabled werewolves due to the missing skin and eye colors on the females, but I did go ahead and tie their tile set to gnolls in the mean time (since they're pretty much the same things appearance-wise).

Hunters, miners, rangers and woodcutters all show their tools.  Ran into a small glitch where nobles were acting as non-tool using civilians even if they were squad leaders.  Other than that, I now have a reasonable framework put together and adding new sets will be a lot easier and hopefully quicker.

Here's the compressed file of the stonesense directory.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/w089cgssda94jri/modified_stonesense_update_5.7z

I'll put an explanation into a spoiler here on how to add races:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hopefully this has been of some use.  I will get the humans file translated over next and use them as a placeholder for ALL of the remaining civs.  Once that is done I'll try and figure out this stone layer and vegetation business before moving onto buildings.

Posting of update #6.

Modified humans and succubi added in this release.  Also fixed an issue where some of the headwear items were improperly assigned in the sprite list. There should now be graphics for the basic race sprites for dwarves, kobolds, humans and succubi (werewolves are still turned off).

For the future will probably just make frost giants scaled up dwarves. Gnomes would be scaled down dwarves.  Warlocks will use the human tile set, but will want to get the skeletons and ghouls defined as a subset (and probably a separate xml file). I plan on using a bulkier body and set of armor for orcs.

Anyway, here's the modified stonesense version #6 link:

Let me know if you see anything really odd.  I am un-experienced at xml, so inputs are greatly appreciated.

I saw errors about plants.xml, and grumpong items are pitch black. This may be related.

Also the succubi have odd colored wings, it might be because it uses custom descriptions as colors. Perhaps it would be best to use the skin color there. Otherwise it all display right.

Edit : I see the console errors are caused by exclemention marks used for commeting. Those can be suppressed by using this syntax.

Thanks for the note on the comments.  I'll get those all fixed so it stops with the invalid file errors.  As for the plants, I have not touched that file as of yet.  Am wanting to get the major civ creatures at least laid flat before I open another front in the continuing battle to get this all converted over to support masterwork.
