Toady: Milk does a body good
« on: November 18, 2007, 09:52:00 am »

How much difficulty would be required to add milking to the cows and goats and other things of that nature? Apparently, editing the RAWS doesn't work at the moment, as in previous versions. Is this on the near horizon?

Milk isn't as good as "The government" wants you to think.
It's especially not good for your bones.

Why not?  What's bad with milk?

I believe they're referring to the fact that most of the calcium found in cow's milk isn't actually absorbed properly by the human body, meaning it's not actually that good for you. And then there's the fact that over 50% of human beings are completely unable to digest cow's milk altogether.

Back on topic: Yeh, where's the milking option? I want my dwarves to quaff pints of camel milk   :D

Currently the only creature that's milkable is the Purring maggot, and i think getting the milk from that creature kills it, so... Milk isn't exactly possible or sustainable at the moment.
Anything that changes this would be welcome, irregardless of real-world functioning of milk.

Dont forget that one and two-hump camels are also milkable creatures.

Also, other dairy products that arn't present currently:
- Curds (cheeze biproduct)
- Weigh (cheeze biproduct)
- Yogurt
- BUTTER
- MOTHER F! ICE CREAM!!! (cold climates only)

Then technically those 50% of humans wouldn't be able to digest their mother's milk, either, assuming they're completely lactose intolerant.
...
Ehhh, dwarven milk.   (but not really)

A much better use for milk then making cheese.

Technically? Not really. Humans are genetically "rigged" to become increasingly lactose intolerant as they age, infants, regardless of subgroup are generally lactose tolerant.

And regions where traditionally food has never been very abundant, such as scandinavia, people who retained their lactose tolerance into adult age outlived the ones who didn't.

A bit like how the inuit populations can actually survive on a atkins diet without their brains and livers rotting.

They probably weren't lactose intolerance as infants, when drinking milk is a normal thing to do.  Very few people are born lactose intolerant, but many adults develop lactose intolerance.

Purring maggot milk may not contain lactose at all.  Is a purring maggot a mammal, or an insect, or what?

A maggot is a fly larva, one might suspect however that as there are no giant flies in DF the purring maggot is actually a misnamed worm.

Well, you don't really "develop" a lactose intolerance, such as disease. It is the normal way to evolve for most mammals :
Being able to digest lactose is a juvenile trait. But probably to prevent adults keeping stealing their child's food, their metabolism change, and they naturally loose the capacity to digest it. Try drinking some woman's milk now, especially the one of the first days, and you'll see that might be pretty sick. Even if you were pretty found of it as a baby.

However, as in our countries we keep drinking cow milk, our body often keeps producing that required enzyme, and thus that juvenile trait.

Who freakin' cares? I just want to milk something other than a maggot. Goats, camels and cows should be milkable, and it would let people that want to create dwarven farms another aspect to use in the game.
