The cold slowly continues to seep through although it soon stops as fur begins to sprout across the chitinous growth. It curls its remaining legs against its mass.

Being in cold areas lowers energy, being in hot areas with the right mutations raises energy. When you reach 0 energy then odds are is you have been frozen and entered hibernation, that or you just did a rather large set of mutations and you need to rest for a bit and burn more energy. Minor shifts cost 5 energy, major shifts cost 10+ energy. You are insulated so you won't die when you freeze, you have 5 or less turns to sort out what mutations you want upon being awoken by humans. The caterpillar legs were redundant so they were absorbed as part of the mutation of the exoskeleton. I would like to remind you all that you lack any sort of sensory system right now.))
