Harlan nodded at the woman who had helped him.

: "Nice work. It's a lot easier to pierce their hearts when they're distracted by something."

With a volley of writhing worms, Harold manages to both steal some gold off the bandit leader with one strike, and guts him with another.

Harold pocketed the gold with great satisfaction and patted himself on the back a little.

:And this is how you deal with bandits. Now where were we?

Clive brushed his hair aside, sweating a fair bit in light of the sun, now a good way above the horizon.
: "Let's find this cave. If we wake early, we can reach the ruins by the next daybreak."

"My thanks. I-I just w-was trying t-to help is all..."

You're a lot better at this than you think, you know...if you just let me take over now...
No, Cecilia! He seems nice, let him be!
You remember the last one as well as I, Sandria...and I remember what you thought of that.
I-I...
That's enough, Cecilia.
...

The woman's power and confidence seemed to fade, and she held the tome nervously under one arm, several of it's pages having used up their magic in the fight. It should last as was necessary, though...

" Are you alright Hector? You seem to have taken quite a beating."
Votel rides over to Hector and offer him a hand
" Let me take you over to the cave, hop on."

"I'd say that was well handled all around. No serious injuries that I can see, and lots of dead bandits." Kain took a moment to clean his sword before putting it away.

"Thanks. They would need to bring something more than just simple magics and swords to bring me down, though!" Hector climbed onto the horse with a tired grunt.

~~~~~~~
The mercenaries found the cave unoccupied and spent the day over some water and salted meat rations. The rest of the day passed quietly as they rotated their watch, the outside sands uneventful as the sun sailed across the sky. As it finally set, the mercenaries awoke and set off for their second night of travel.
Most of the path was traveled with no incident, but a large sandstorm seemed to be brewing off in the distance to the north, in the direction that they were traveling. Heedless of anyone else's protest, Clive argued that it was no threat. By the time they had reached the storm's edge, the surrounding terrain was nothing but never ending, flat sand.
~~~~~~~
: "..." Clive remained silent, scanning the surrounding area. Nothing but sand in one direction, and a distant but huge billowing cloud in the other, illuminated by the sun's light slowly rising on the horizon.

"I feel obliged to point out that there is a sandstorm on top of us, and nothing resembling shelter in sight. We need to shelter ourselves somehow. Anyone got any bright ideas?"
