I hadn't played dwarf fortress for more than a year, and picked it up again.

First game, the dwarven caravan comes.

Barrel of Sparrow Blood

Barrel of Sparrow Blood!

That was when I knew I was playing Dwarf Fortress again.

The problem with sparrow blood, as opposed to monarch butterfly brains, is it's just about plausible.

I believe it is because those creatures have to have brains to work, and the caravan just brings meat items from any creature they have access to.

Thus, bee brains.

Maybe it is just the name of a kind of food for dwarves, instead of actual brain. Sweetbread is not bread.

Well, what part of the body do you think dwarves consider to be the brain if not THE brain? I would say liver, but those are already defined.

Sweetbreads are indeed not bread, but this is not just a Dwarven thing.  It was a Human thing first.

Was it Boatmurdered where the monarch butterfly flew in and blocked the entrance?
I think it was, but I'm too lazy to check.

Yes, it was Boatmurdered. A butterfly jammed the door that have stopped a horde of elephants beforehand. I guess it explains how dwarves got the brains - the butterfly must be pretty big...

it's been a while, but from what i remember:

you cant make them in game, because creatures of a low enough size (or any vermin creature) does not drop all the organs that larger creatures do.  Small enough creatures dont even drop bones.

World gen, and by extension the imports you get from other civs, they abstract some of this away.  they dont bother to check if something can drop organs or components, they just take any tissue it might have and then process it into a potential footstuff.

I think in the next release blood barrels and bug brains will no longer be available.  Unless you are from a culture that will process blood into food?  I'm not sure, I remember reading something about this but I cant remember the details.  Not sure why you wouldnt have black pudding.
