Challenge me! (dwarf Edition)
« on: June 18, 2014, 10:04:43 pm »

How many of you have hit a point in DF, where literally nothing can provide a serious challenge to you? When was the last time you lost a fort to invaders (or similar nasties)? Have you enjoyed the beautiful tropics and rain that causes your former friends to turn into blood-thirsty thralls hellbent on killing all living things?

I know I have. My current embark takes place on a terrifying glacier, with undead, with thralling cloud. Oh. And I dug down into all 3 caverns at 4 corners of my surface, to allow the nasties from below to come up and play on the surface! And all I had was a simple door blocking the heart of my fort from the outside horrors.

Oh. And all siegers had 15+5 skills, and 'strong' armors, dwarves had 0 skills. I also generated with 240 civilizations to ensure I had a lot of !FUN! arrive. No trap halls, no lava, no drowning, no hellfire turrets or anything 'op'. All I used was 4 dwarves who trained naturally inside the fort, with hosh-posh mix-n-match armor I acquired from traders.

Needless to say, After 700+ kills between these 4 without even being BRUISED... I realized MWDF is simply too easy... for me at least.

The Challenge:

So I am proposing a challenge to you, faithful Urists! I will accept any challenge you propose (that can be feasibly be achieved). Anything. Whether I can only embark in X biome, have to build in the sky, have to use a bunch of naked villagers to wrestle my enemies to death, not being allowed to wall off my entrance, anything! Try me. I will take on the challenge, keep a quick document of it (if desired), and show any 'fun' events that pop up from the challenge, even streams if it gets interesting enough to bother.

The more twisted, unique, and interesting the challenge - the more FUN there shall be all around. I dare say if we get enough good ideas, we can evolve this into a challenge-library for those seeking such harder FUN from the game.

Below is a quick, easy to copy and paste 'challenge suggestion' form I did up cuz people are lazy. :P

Challenge Name:

Biomes Allowed:

Good, Neutral or Evil Embark:

Population limit (max for challenge):

Challenge details:

Throw at me what you got, and I shall crush your challenge! (Assuming it's not idiotically impossible ;P).

* The post is a total mess, poorly written, and I'm well aware.

the Impossible Warlock Itemless Embark

Biomes allowed - any. good might be too impossible.

Population limit?. its warlocks! hehe..

Challange mode, you have no access to axes without metal or anvils, you must "Take" them from your invaders in autumn, spend your three wood wisely.

Embark on a Cave, Settle the first Cavern. Settle the SECOND cavern for extra fun.

Goal, Goto the Circus by year 8. winning condition is an overlords throneroom made with a slade throne and slade statues, be as ornate as possible.

for dwarves try it without making a wooden training axe >:}

Challenge name: Tooth and claw.

A group of gnomish druids, upset at the damage  their technology has done to the wild, have sworn off its use and gone to live in harmony with nature...

Location: Any.  I suggest a forest with a cave.

Play as gnomes.  No traps, armor, or weapons allowed: not even picks or axes.  That means no wood or stone!  You may embark with some basic resources, most importantly some blocks and wood for beds, or trade for more stuff later but you can never use metal for anything, even if you get some from invaders.  No walling yourself off, either, you are supposed to be living wild here.

So how will you defend yourself?  With a bunch of trained animals recruited from the wild using a nature shrine.  Pets and advanced animal training will be your only defense.  As your gnomes' skill in unarmed fighting improves, you will be able to teach your pets better combat technique as well.

All fortress defense enemies active.  How long can you last exposed to your enemies using nothing but angry forest critters and tiny hairy pugilists?

Edit: removed pet size restriction due to probable FPS concerns.

I love how the title of the thread is "Challenge me! (dwarf edition)" and people suggest succubi, gnomes and warlocks. :P

I wasn't sure, but nowhere in the post itself did it say that it had to be dwarves  ;)

To its defence, if you are bored of dwarves, you can try another race. That said I'd like to see a no military challenge with dwarves too, only traps.

That one works well with priests due to the easy access to both devilwood and platinum.

This takes a few seasons of setup and some patience:

1 x 1 Embark, terrifying anything so long as it's 1 tile adjacent to an ocean.  Bonus points if the ocean is on three sides of your 1x1.

Pick a spot to build your fortress, 50x50.

Channel down 1 layer over the entire embark minus your selected fort spot, and a 4x4 "road" leading directly to a map edge.

Fill the channeled area with 7 deep lava (using DF hack).

Live your entire existence in that 50x50 space.  Limit yourself to 800 points on embark for double !FUN!.

I don't understand how this is possible. I just don't. Please enlighten, SabbyKat?
