How to Pick-up an Adolescent or Mature Fort?
« on: June 17, 2014, 08:34:55 pm »

I have this problem in many games, not just Dwarf Fortress, but when I put it down for an extended period of time - say a week or two - I lose all track fo what I was doing and my motvations for doing it.  I try to leave 'N'otes for all levers and in all sensitive locations, but its not always in every place I want or need them in.

So I often just abandon or scrap a save when this happens, and hope its for the best.  Actually, next update will bea  godsend for that.  Hopefully we can still abandon too, though.

You can definitely still abandon. Retirement is probably the feature I'm most looking forward to. Instead of having my successful forts fall to the FPS death or are sent to the recycling bin, now they can exist in the world in a semi-meaningful way.

But yeah, I suffer from the same conundrum. After a point the fort just becomes too stable and dull, and besides from putting it in needless and illogical danger, it just becomes bland.

Oh yeah, I'm sure the abandon option will still be there for when all hope is lost (NEVAR!) or you only intended it to be a temporary fort.

Same here, forts usually fall to either FPS death or boredom.

The ongoing world will also keep decades old forts from running out of migrants or megabeasts and keep the wildlife populations from slowly going extinct. I killed the last FB in the world some 50 or so years into the current fort which is in stasis atm. The underground wildlife eventually became pretty much just crundles and bugbats.

The very first thing you should do is pull every lever in the fort and see what happens and assuming all your dwarves aren't set ablaze in a sea of magma, you go from there.

Lord I know how you feel. I'm very forgetful, and god knows I've half-built rooms that I come onto later and wonder about.

Honestly I just play it for a while to see what happens, often the problem I was attempting to fix earlier will present itself.

Well, you might try complimenting the fort on it's textile industry and then ask if they're interested in meeting up for coffee.

And then hope you're not flooded by the magma sea...? [/distasteful_joke]

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

The solution, it turns out, is to improvise, get irritated, and turn to modding.  I dont want to go too far with the new version out in the next two weeks, but Ive taken an interest in trying to make different 'cultures' for different race.

For a moment I thought this was going to be like a personal/dating thing and thought it was skeevy as hell to put the "adolescent" in there.
