I'm all for it- the possibilities are nearly endless for this idea! Smoke Signals, suffocation, Habitat Annihilation...

I'm gonna go ahead and bump this thread with a +1 to the idea.
AA single workshop may not make much smoke, but enough of them together should eventually make your fortress a veritable isengard, belching columns of black smoke into the sky.

I'm all for this idea! Although I think if the workshops can't vent the smoke, it should start spreading through the fortress producing initially all sorts of bad thoughts, and in the worst of cases, job cancellations: If the dwarf can't breath he/she will cancel his/her current job ant will try to go to a less polluted area, like outside, even if that causes them to vomit for cave-adaptation. :P

In the most extreme situations, dwarves won't be able to perform the jobs that cause smoke, HOWEVER if smoke is ventilated outside of the area of the specific workshop that causes smoke, maintaining the air in those areas tolerable, BUT actively contaminating the rest of the fortress, then you're up to an endless source of contamination for all your dwarves to breath. :)

At the same time, you'd be obligated to build chimneys AND you'd have to build them with a grate, to avoid the intrusion of flying invaders. :D

Although if they're not heat-resistant they might die before reaching the fortress OR if the chimney is to long they might suffocate before reaching the bottom. :P

Oh my gosh that would be so pointless and impractical. I love it!

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.

I like the sound of that. Smoke would make a good addition.

This has been suggested loads of times in the past, and I'd love to see something like it implemented. Would give certain industries a bit more weight to them at the very least.

Loving this idea, as for the chimneys needing fans, not really, it could depend on the wind conditions for the area, much like windmills.  Live in a very windy area, and the wind will pull the air out of your fortress, just have the chimney higher than any other entrance, and it will work.  Conversely, if there is no wind, then watermills, dwarf power, or giant hamsters will be needed to turn fans.
EDIT:  Perhaps having the skill of the operator affect the amount of smoke is produced, with dabbling operators producing lots of smoke, and legendary ones producing little smoke.

It's a cool idea and all, but you wouldn't really want to model the smoke effects on human reactions to mining conditions, would you? Bad thoughts from breathing in smoke? More like 'nostalgic thoughts of home and family'. Dwarves have grown up in smoky halls for generations, their lungs probably filter out anything harmful (or transform it into something useful like their livers apparently do with booze). Fond of drink and industry - body powered by smoke and alcohol.

Fine for choking kittens, elves, and the human traders that accidentally got trapped in the depot of course.

Ok, a little smoke for the dwarves would be fine, heck, some people love the smell of campfire smoke, so little amounts should be fine.  But having lots of smoke that makes it hard to see/breath is always going to be bad.
