Aye, I suppose. I just mean, what happens once the true bulk of their forces arrive?

I figure every race could probably hold them off(except the Orks, at least not in space) if they could get the upper hand throughout the galaxy.

From my point of view

Certain race have advantage over other and are not made to be balance anyway so it is just part of the 40k universe

No, it's all written to be fairly balanced. That way it can always be on the brink of destruction without ever teetering in.

It occurs to me we should probably have a general 40k thread for discussion.

We should, but meh. The way I see it -

Imperium's just way too huge. They could lose dozens of worlds and not really care. Generic "Good Guys", even if they aren't really "good", since, y'know, Grimdark...

Tau are too small for anyone to give a shit. They're like extremely smart children with really high tech stuff. But they're still children. And commies.

Orks are the generic species for everyone to hate, and just a general enemy to throw into any situation, without the expectation for them to win. Kinda a filler race.

Chaos is still the generic Bad Guy.

Necrons are "Still awakening, and have yet to bring their full firepowah!".... Which is funny, since it's basically the same situation with the Tyranids. Advanced races that are relentless and extremely powerful, and feel no pain; yet they will never bring forth their galaxy annihilating power. For plot purposes, of course.

Eldar are tree loving hippies, with their goddamn Eldar Twin-Linked trickery and "Run and Gun" powers in the tabletop game.

Then there's the Dark Eldar. I never really understood the reason for the Dark Eldar being their own specific race, seeing how they basically worship Slaanesh and fall in with the rest of Chaos, the only difference being they're Eldar.

Primary reason, I believe, is that most of the 40k races were originally satirized generic Warhammer Fantasy races. Similarly, ratlings are supposed to be space halflings, ogryn are space ogres, and there was once a space dwarf subhuman race.

I think they still hate Slaanesh, but they appease her and end up corrupting themselves and such. They still hate Chaos, but they're like the least organized faction of any, in my mind.

Yes, even more so than the Orks.

But yes they have very little reason to exist, I agree.

I feel like the Tau are the real good guys. By virtue of being extremely naive(small children with really high-tech stuff is not a bad analogy, actually), but nonetheless. I was originally going to go with Chaos Daemons for reasons when I first wanted to get into the lore, but then I found out they're just evilevilevilevilevilbadderp. Instead of being diverse and shit. It was only later that I realized every faction except the Imperium, and only because it in turn is made up of individual factions that are like this, is a Civilization of Hats. >.>

What the what?

Dark Eldar hate Slaanesh with a vengeance. Just like other Eldar they are deadly afraid of having their souls consumed by She Who Thirsts. They hide in the webway to escape her influence and sacrifice/feast on the souls of their captives to safeguard their own. So same methods as Chaos maybe, but vastly different reasons for doing what they do.

They have a lot of infighting, but not really that disorganized. How would they perform their galaxy-wide looting, pirating and slavery taking? They even have a 'grand leader' in the form of Vect.

There used to be a lot more subtlety and nuance in the 40K lore, but then GW screwed up and dumbed down it's own universe.
