Armour sloping has been in for a while. It's just that custom cannons and missiles weren't very prone to bouncing except at very very shallow angles. Advanced cannons are modelled much better.

speaking about advanced cannons, I found that a bit of armor penetration coupled with penetration fuse and a bit of HE can be extremely disruptive tu hulls.
explosives on the surface rarely make big holes, pure armor piercing tends to merely go through with minimal damage, but make the projectile explode mid ship, and it is great. saced armor might cause some trouble there, of course. although you can also set a time after penetration, which is indifferent to spaced armor.

You still need enough kinetic damage to destroy whichever you need to pen

It's doable but ends up with comically huge cannons if you aim at penetrating even just two metal beam

well, yes. it is for high caliber cannons. definitely not something for smaller ships. ut on capital ships, it might be useful.
I had some good results with a 0.3 gauge cannon. couldn't go bigger due to bugged 8m loaders.

and if it doesn't completely penetrate... well, it still explodes. it is not a wasted shot and I still prefer it to purely AP.
Not sure how it compares to other shells, but in my tests it was at least more effective than shaped charge.

yeah shaped charges have a tendency to overpenetrate all the thing without leaving much damage to blocks the streams hit, I'm unsure on how damage works for them

I've been experimenting with the advanced cannons. It's really fun to make 8m long high explosive armour piercing shells which are about half gunpowder. They just tear through wooden ships.

Hello dual advanced cannons which fire the shells mentioned above.
Also hello turret mounted mine launcher.

How do I build stuff on turret, after I finish building it for the first time. I cant place/ delete any blocks in it.

Yup. Even more fun is low gauge 8m shells which are all gunpowder except for a sabot warhead and body. They travel so fast, it's like a pulsed laser.

While looking at the turret, press ']'.

Bump for new trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRtijerSmko

Also, localized resources are now a thing and I believe that new, far more balanced engines are as well, and if they aren't in the stable branch they will be soon. Old engines will still work for the time being, but once the new ones hit stable the old type will become unplaceable. The new engines are somewhat more complicated and far less efficient due to power being calculated on a linear per-piston basis instead of exponentially. They're also quite a bit more powerful on a small scale and far less powerful on a large one, so ships encased in multiple layers of full-strength shields will be exorbitantly expensive in terms of power and fuel costs, which will in turn be exacerbated by resources no longer being sucked from a central, global pool, but required on a per-ship basis.

Fuel refineries are now multi-block structures as well.

Videos on the new engines:

Its really fun being two hours into a game only to hit the wrong close button and cause the game to close.

 Saving clearly saves salt.

Also, from what I have heard (off of Aavak's current letsplay) that there is another engine rework in the works, intended to lessen the exceptional power that is possible from it. Who knows, it may make multiple engines per craft necessary.

It took a LOT of work convincing the developers not to overcomplicate their game I'll tell you.

But overcomplication is fun... Least, so long as it is informative.

The "over" part of overcomplication is highly subjective.

Well... they were going to remove custom cannons and the current engines for something more complicated and design intensive.
