all the new parts and formula:

Wow that is a lot of science that's been done there. Thanks.

air pump add buoyancy at the center of their volume. this means top deck and bottom deck will need to never be completely separated. you can create vertical section to the ship volumes, but creating horizontal sections is a recipe for a disaster.
That'd be what I've been doing wrong then. in hindsight the obvious solution to having to fiddle with the buoyancy on the lower and upper parts of the hull would be to just not have them separated,

1 press tab a couple times

2 it has to be connected to a missile connector block

should connect from any direction but watch out for the missile controller, that one only connects from front and above

I've been having a blast playing around with advanced cannons in the editor. Airburst flak produces some really nice effects if you can get enough of it firing at once. Though I am having trouble working with inaccuracy and loading times without having to make something absurdly huge.

From what I've heard, the only good simple weapon is the drill.

all simple weapons have super short range

if you need small stuff, advanced cannons are quite viable

So before I spend the time balancing this, is there a way to make submarines heavier than water besides just stuffing them with lead?

I think there are actually ways to make even a lighter then water craft go underwater.

But to my knowledge most things are as heavy or heavier then water anyhow. Just don't make your sub out of wood or alloy.

Air pumps. Air pumps are your friend.

To keep it upright: Instead of using lead on the bottom since it will be submerged you could use light alloy for the conning tower

To keep it submerged: more metal! Use air pump as other people said. Use control block to activate and deactivate them around the target altitude.

To keep it alive is actually better however if it naturally floats and the you use the water hydrofoil or whatever names to push it below, so that if health gets under 80% and a breach occur it doesn't die.

Again control blocks to tune altitude. Dephytude.

There is a LUA ai with terriain avoidance on the forums.

Real submarines pump water into tanks to submerge, yes? Can you do that in the game with air pumps? I've seen in videos that air pumps remove water from a room but does that actually affect anything or is it just visual? I'm more interested because I've been thinking about getting this game for a bit.

Air punp work as expected, you can control water fraction and affects buoyancy, you can fine tune water fraction etc.

I am trying to build some advanced cannons, but I am running into problems.
for one, I am trying to replicate the fancy cannons with most of the stuff below deck, but it gets awkward fast. especially since I still haven't found a way to have a one block wide column from the turret block to above deck.
Also, I have problems with loaders. often, it won't load at all. ammunition controller says the shell at 0.5 m gauge would take 6 meters, but even when I have 8m ammo clips, the input feeders claim that there is no space. I can't make it spawn stuff until it is at gauge 0.2 . which is nice if I want a gauge 0.2 cannon, but I am trying to build something bigger. Any idea or suggestion?

What do you mean you haven't found a way to have a one block wide column from the turret block to above deck? Also, last I checked, 8m ammo clips are bugged, they think that they're 4m ammo clips.
