Black, fast moving magma
« on: June 11, 2014, 07:11:24 pm »

Something I saw today that immediately made me think of Dwarf Fortress: http://www.wired.com/2014/03/strangest-magma-earth-carbonatites-oldoinyo-lengai/
One active volcano and several inactive ones have magma with an unusual composition that makes it black when liquid, white when solid, much less viscous and at a lower temperature than regular magma.

Reminds me of Oil for some reason.

I've been trying to start an embark near a volcano.

That stuff is awesome. I want a moat made of it.

I've been trying to start an embark near a volcano.
Use advanced worldgen and set "desired volcano number" to 40 or something.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

The hard part is getting a volcano, plus a river, on a small embark.

Is that lava foam? That's amazing.

Does less viscosity mean less energy to move it up a pump stack?  ???

That's pretty cool, I'd never seen that before. I like the crackling bubbling sound it makes. Weird how it can spray out like a water hose.

Correction: it's lava. It's only called magma is when it's under the surface.

Lower viscosity means lower resistance to flow, which translates in less energy reuired to make it flow.
However in the case of vertical pump stacks a more important factor is the density, becasue the weight is the resistance to go up.
I dont know if there is a diference of density between this lava and normal lava.

Anyway, if someone can touch it with a foot and survive this lava is not dorfy enough.

Completely missed the 'magma-safe shoe' poke :o I still wouldn't touch it with my foot though...

Also... duh... viscosity and density are independent of eachother. Probably would make a poor lava lamp though..

Neat. Looking it up,  it isn't the lava that is blue; the lave is actually covered in fire which is blue due to the sulfur. (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/why-does-indonesian-volcano-burn-bright-blue-180949576/?no-ist).
I think being ‼lava‼ is even dwarfier than just being blue itself.

search for the world gen cook book, there are a few examples of small embarks with volcanos and streams/rivers together. Believe I've seen a 2x2 embark with both features.

So basically a volcano of soda ash and limestone. Weird. I'd assume it's probably something like a normal intrusive lava plume that gets close to but doesn't touch some sedimentary rock in just the right place where it can melt it through the division and make it erupt separately?

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.
