Time to kick Cipher out of Andromeda's mines. The team is rested up and ready to go.

Holy shit! This woman is a bigger psychopath than Jonathan!

Then again, ghosts *do* exist in the Pokémon universe, and I'm not just talking about Ghost-types.


"Foundry changes all Rock-type moves into Fire-type moves. At first, this seems like a bad ability, but I wonder... Does this effect the Stealth Rocks move? Can one set up molten Stealth Rocks and normal one together? The possibilities are endless."

Anyway, it's time to stop Cipher, and I think I know where the mine that Moss is sending me to is.



It's amazing how fast crossing the desert is after you've dealt with all the trainers and use a Max Repel.



The Andromedeans bury their dead here? Maybe I'll see that guy whose head Moss sliced with a drill. Oh wait, I already have.

If it wasn't for the badly painted-on shades, that guy looks like a Crusader.

He starts off with Lucario, who is flamed by Combusken. Actually, it was Zoruark, who took out Combusken with a lucky critical hit. Carbink takes over while I revive Combusken. Then an actual Lucario comes out and gets flamed by Combusken. Lucario survived and took Combusken out with a Bone Rush. I revive him again and let Vespiquen take down Lucario.



Isn't it kinda hot in the desert with that armor?



Y'all look alike: beaten black and blue.

He had Skuntank, Honchkrow, and Mandibuzz.

After beating him...




Booyah, time to kick ass. Especially since he learned Flame Kick upon evolving.



So if I take you out, then, besides Greevil, you guys are done?

First up was Cacturne. Flame Kick dealt an appropriate defeat to it. Second was a female Absol that ran into the Love Bird. Third was Bisharp that was Flame Kicked in the head. Last was Liepard who was X-Scissored by Vespiquen(good to know, Bug is good against Dark).



I've already beaten the strongest Grunt, so what are you going to do about it?

Attack me with Sharpedo, Krokorok, and Drapion, that's what. Also good to know, Rough Skin applies damage on every hit. Blaziken learned that the hard way using Double Kick.

At this point, the Max Repels I used to cross the desert wore off, and now my team is at the mercy of the wild Pokémon here. ...I mean I'm busy capturing anything new.



Stunfisk for the Stunfisk god, I suppose. I missed this one in Blackfist Safari Zone, despite repeated attempts. Catching this one here cost me Blaziken.


"Leader Moss wants us to use it to stop that Steelix, but we really don't care!"

So why exactly are you going for it? Somebody in your group got a Steelix?

Anyway, he's quickly dispatched.



Bleeding hypocrite. No really, he's bleeding profusely now.

After dealing with the last grunt, I come down a ladder into a room that looks like there's something in it.

Well yeah, or I wouldn't have made it this far.



Team Olympus had a Grunt Master. Do you know what happened to him? I kicked his ass.



Huh, all of the previous grunts used Dark-types. I'll send in Vespiquen to deal with this.

Vespiquen uses Toxic while Dusclops uses Curse. I can out-Heal Order the damage from Curse long enough for Toxic to wear down Dusclops.





Vaporeon shouldn't have trouble with this.



I don't know why, but my team seems slow.



Another one Vaporeon should have little trouble with.



Bleh, Foul Play is quite foul.

I send in Carbink to take this out.

Krookodile used Dig, so I send in Unfezant to dodge it while the Love Bird uses Attact. She nearly resisted Unfezant's charms, but I still had time enough to revive Vaporeon and pull Love Bird out at 1HP, sending in Carbink again.





Blaziken knows the fastest way to a frosty woman's heart is...



...with a flaming kick to the head.

...Blaziken doesn't pick up very many ladies that way. Strangely, he does seem popular with the Crush Girls, though.

Froslass also used Hail before going down.



Why does she only have one eye?

Not risking anything, I just start throwing Ultra Balls. Unfortunately, she went Hyper on the first turn.



Got her on the third ball. None too soon, since Carbink wasn't really tanking Shadow attacks, nor could I withdraw him because Mawile used Shadow Hold(same effect as Mean Look).

Time to finish this battle.



An Earthquake will settle this nicely.



And dog eats dog from hell.







Don't worry, I'll take good care of that Mawile. Because you didn't.

When a guy from a group known for treachery starts showering you with praise, he's going to stab you in the back.

Anyway, I take the Steelixite and head back to Andromeda. On the way out, I sweep the cave looking for any new Pokémon I missed.



I'm surprised I haven't gotten this one yet. I've used Geodude early in the game, plus I got Golem.

There was also a Deino(Zweilious/Hydreigon's base stage), but I couldn't catch it due to overkill, and they're pretty rare it seems.

After I get back to town, I look around for the mine that Moss wanted me to come to.



I guess this is it.



I'll need to proceed carefully. The place is shaking, and if what Moss said was true, I should be careful of falling rocks.



This guy is just standing around, doing nothing except challenging people to a fight. And he questions my sanity?



I do, actually. That fight was rather hard.

After coming back from healing, I head deeper into the mine, fighting Hikers who keep telling me it's dangerous in here.



I would say it's the "of" part. Can you explain it to me?

He had an Aurorus, some kind of Ice/Ground(?) dinosaur, that used Round. It did fairly decent damage to Blaziken, despite being ineffective. I've never thought Round was a particularly powerful move.



What your boss asked me to do?



This place looks like where all the miners kept dying.



I am curious to know what they're mining here, given that they keep sending in miners like this. I know the town's economy depends on this mine, but still...

So... um, what were you doing here all this time?

Anyways, I get myself set up to battle Steelix. I should be able to catch it using a Heavy Ball(Steelix weighs over 800lbs). The real problem is that half my team can destroy it, the other half can't do squat. Blaziken's Double Kick should be weak enough to not kill it. I walk over to a nearby hole to summon Steelix.



That's not Steelix's normal color.

Probably guaranteed shiny, of course.

I was right about Double Kick, though Blaziken got paralyzed by Dragonbreath. I will also point out that Heavy Balls are utter crap and I caught her with an Ultra Ball. I think the only thing I caught with a Heavy Ball was Avalugg who weighs over 9000lbs(I had to double-check for that extra digit).

Do I finally get to figure out this damn Mega Evolution thing?



If I say no, will she cut my head off with a drill?

This would be a bigger shock if I hadn't spent half the game fighting Mega Evolutions already.

With that taken care of, I leave the mine to prepare for her Gym battle. I am assuming Moss is a Steel-type leader, or possibly Rock, so I switch Vespiquen and take out my shiny new Steelix and give her the Mega Stone she wanted.



Rock it is. This shouldn't be too hard. Aside from Steelix, I've got Blaziken, Vaporeon, and Granbull.

However, instead of Gym trainers, there's wild Pokémon. And Max Repels do not function here, either(rather, they don't stop encounters).

At the very least, I pick up a Sandslash.



It takes a while, since the place is a maze, much like Jonathan's gym, only worse. I finally make it to the Gym Leader.

This Steelix. And no, I'm not. You actually spelled it out pretty well.



And? I've fought Mega-Evolutions before. The only thing that's new about this is that I have one, too.



Meh, I'm more interested in whatever her Shadow Pokémon is.





Is that drill plugged into her back?! And is it really a drill and not a motorized sex toy?



...Ground-types. Dammit. Well, sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. As for Mamoswine, I've been told about a certain Mega Ability.







Well, that sucked. Especially since before transforming, Steelix had Sturdy instead of Foundry.

I sent in Vaporeon as a replacement. After hitting Mamoswine once with Scald, Moss changed out Mamoswine.



That takes care of the sandstorm, at least. Gliscor's also got a Toxic Orb. I don't care, since she's also got a double weakness to Ice, and Vaporeon has a high Sp. Atk.





First, I heal Vaporeon, then set up an Aqua Ring before using Scald.





Obviously, I'm not going to outspeed that(couldn't even outspeed Nidoking). I play cautiosly and heal again. Meanwhile...





). That's a lot.

She... they use Earthquake. I can only tank that by healing, but next turn Moss switches back to Mamoswine. Good for me, since I can finish her off.



Hey ladies! Say hello to the Love Bird!



Not surprised by this at all.

Going back to my original strategy of matching Hyper Potion against Earthquake until one runs out, Vaporeon comes out. She runs out of Earthquakes, but Vaporeon falls to a critical Stone Edge. I use Granbull to revive Vaporeon, and drop their speed with Scary Face. Bringing Vaporeon back out, I discover to my disadvantage that Mega Dugtrio has Dry Skin. I've still got Ice Beam.



That was brutal.



Well, nertz.



Okay, that wasn't as bad as I'd thought it'd be.



She might actually pull one off, too.

Carbink gets Toxic'd, so I swap to Vaporeon. Knowing that Gastrodon might have Storm Drain, I freeze him with Ice Beam, and set up Aqua Ring and Rain Dance.

I was right about Storm Drain, and worse it negated Scald completely, so I have to rely on Ice Beam.

Luck was with me, since Gastrodon remained frozen the entire battle.









One knocked out, the other captured.



Granted, one did nearly wipe out my team.



I get the Quake Badge. Because I really needed to be reminded of goddamn earthquakes.



I get TM126 Spikes. Not particularly useful.


"It's a very strategic move, not everyone can use it properly. It sets up layers of spikes on the opponent's field that damage Pokémon as they switch in. I hope you'll find a use for it!"

Yeah, not that useful.

With Andromeda taken care of, it's time to end this one.

Yeah... Megasteelix, the one in this game at least, is a good pokemon...

But... it is definitely one that requires a specific strategy.

For example you can stack stealth rock and Foundary stealth rock

Having finally learned how to perform a Mega Evolution, I find that Mega Evolution, a shiny Steelix, to be rather underwhelming. I decide to change her out for another Steel-type: Mawile. Or rather, Shadow Mawile. I still have to purify her.



After taking her out of the box, I walk around region for a while, scanning every place with the Time Caller, just in case I missed anything through time(nope). Eventually, I get bored walking, and buy a Joy Scent to speed this along, since perfume and massages are a great way to open a girl's heart.


I take some time to get her all the way cleared, then take her to Origin City to finish it.



Since I didn't like the purification scene, which is just a black screen with text saying it's done, I did one myself.







I hope I don't feel obligated to ever to that again.

Comparing Mawile's stats to Steelix's, Mawile wins out in every stat except defense, where Steelix's is higher than Carbink's. Steelix's Special Defense is weak, though, whereas Carbink's isn't. I'm staying with Mawile. I'm sure I'll find a Mawilite at some point.

I make another roster change, by replacing Granbull with Espurr, just to try her out. She's nearly 20 levels below everyone else, so I'll put her in front - like nearly all Gen VI Pokémon, she lacks a map sprite.

With that done, I continue my journey.

Andromeda City doesn't have an exit, but there was one place in the desert I can still check out. It was blocked by a sinkhole, but with Steelix out of the way, that shouldn't be a problem.



This tower looked interesting before.



That wall looks interesting.


"I should find out what they do before I touch any of them. They could be dangerous!"

Oh come on, where's the adventurer spirit? I didn't get this far without groping every wall, object, and person I found.

The exit was just to the right.



It looks like an African savannah.

And like any savannah, it has things I've never caught before.









That was quite a lot for this region.

I've seen stranger biome segways.

The ensuing battle was nearly as hard as Moss. However, despite Espurr's lack of general participation(probably the reason everyone else is hurting), she gained a few levels.




For some reason, the Pokédex image is very different.



The Forms page shows the one I just evolved for both male and female, which doesn't look much like that one there.

I was also checking my team at this point, and I noticed Vaporeon and Mawile both have a ribbon, presumably for having been cured of Shadow disease.


"What exactly is... 'swag'?"

No, no you don't. Forget anything you ever heard about swag.

After having Meowstic erase this idiot's memory of swag, without any particular regards about whether or not she causes permanent brain damage, I head forward to check out this house.

After the next trainer, I run back to Andromeda to heal again, and I noticed that the encounter rate in Quake Desert seems to have dropped. Maybe the earthquakes were riling the wild Pokémon up?

Hmm, tough decision. Do I go to Magmax Cave to stop Cipher and Magma from messing with Groudon, or do I look around for the Forest Cabin(marked my map here in Route 3X) and kill Jake?

"I'm going to go check it out!"

Oh goodie. This guy can deal with Groudon, I'll go find Jake.

Instead of going, he attacks me in a vicious battle that leaves almost my entire team critical. I still beat him, though.



Dammit!

Hell, Groudon can wait. Cipher implied they'd wait for me so they can impress me with their scheme. I head in the other direction, which leads me across a very long bridge over the trees.



This must be the Forest Cabin. And inside must be... Jake.



Must... supress... urge... to kill.

I have to find out how he got past quarantine. Then kill him.

Anyway, I quickly switch to Blaziken.

I'm currently lacking in the anti-Water category. Ironically, I had a great anti-Water team back in Vesryn.




Well, piss.

I set up Aqua Ring while he sets up Skull Bash. Skull Bash does mediocre damage while my Scald next turn causes a burn. The burn weakens subsequent Skull Bashes to the point that Aqua Ring heals the damage, while hastening Blastoise's demise.



There are many moves Blastoise could have had that would have worked better than Skull Bash.



Besides Klefki, is he just sampling starters?



Petal Dance did far more damage than I think it should.



Oh, now that's bullcrap! You said you dumped them in Vesryn!



Jirachi was faster with Zen Headbutt. I switch to Mawile.

Zen Headbutt is more effective than I thought it'd be, and Mawile struggles to keep pace with the damage. Fortunately, Mawile has both Swords Dance and Baton Pass. She only needed the former.





Besides Swagkey and Swagsense, he's just using starters.

I try to Baton Pass but Mawile can't get out of the way quick enough.



Oh well, Vaporeon wouldn't have benefited from it anyway. Actually, Carbink would have, and I send him first.


After a run of plinking attacks off one another, Emboar blindsides me with Heat Crash.



I send the Love Bird, since he needs the Exp.



Good fight, good night.

Tastes like chewing on used coffee grinds, doesn't it?





He gives me a Blazikenite. Awesome. I have just the starter for it.



Volcano number... 7 I think? is just around the corner, do you want me to throw you into it?

Blaziken immediately gets his Mega Stone. Can't wait to see how it works on Cipher. Not Magma, though, 'cause... you know, they use Fire-types mostly.

I leave the Forest Cabin and head the way towards Magmax Cave. I'll test Blaziken on the first trainer I see.

Did you hear about the myth of Akura and Divaevus? Except that wasn't a myth. I killed a god.



He starts off with Primeape. A worthy test subject.




Maximum headkick power achieved.

Blaziken's stat increases are rather limited, and his ability changed to Speed Boost. Not too bad, but at least he looks downright awesome.

Primeape used Swagger, and Blaziken confused himself to death. I revived him, but found out that fainting cancels the Mega Evolution and you cannot Mega Evolve again. That sucks.

The rest of the battle turned out annoyingly hard.

Also, aside from the horn/mouth, Mawile looks a lot like Helioptile from behind... or front, I can't tell which.

Clearing the next group of trainers, I come before what I assume to be the entrance of Magmax Cave. Before I can enter, I catch another dirty ape.



Is it giving me the finger?



Cipher and Team Magma should be inside.



There's some Magma Grunts to deal with.



Your "good buddies" Cipher told me where to find you. Plus, I think you guys might have mentioned it at one point.

He isn't so hard. First a pointless spitwad duel between Carbink and Torkoal that was ended by Vaporeon, then a Camerupt that was also ended by Vaporeon. Then...



Curious, a Water-type. Then again, in Ruby they did supposedly have a fleet of Wailmer(in Sapphire and Emerald, that was Team Aqua).

I try to use Attact, but she's got Oblivious. She entered Hyper Mode on the first turn.



Got her on the second attempt.

His last Pokémon is Lumineon. Why are they using Water-types? The previous grunt had Simipour...

The next guy opened with Seaking. What's going on here? I thought Maxie hated water.



I get the idea! Jeez!

He started with Seviper, then Zangoose. His third, though...



I use Iron Defense, then just start throwing balls.



That took awhile.

His last Pokémon was Sharpedo. I Baton Passed to Carbink to fight it.

The next battle, Unfezant made a sword fall in love with him. Two swords, it was a Doublade.

I follow a long bridge that wraps around the area I just went through, and come to a new area.



Instead of Magma Grunts, however.

There's Cipher.


My answer is the same: hahahahano.

The Cipher Grunts seem easier than the Magma ones for some reason.



Why would he think that?

Shortly there after, I cross a wooden bridge laid across the surface of the lava. Think about that one for a second.



Which will soon be mine.

Bleh, had to give up both my tanks for that.

After another bridge over lava, I come to this guy.

In the next chamber, I come across Maxie and Greevil preparing to unseal Groudon.





And I guess this is the part where Greevil stabs Maxie in the back.

Which would inevitably go wrong because you have absolutely no idea what you're doing. Not that Cipher is just going to sit back and watch.

You mentioned your Evee didn't get any interesting moves from being de-shadowed. Is that true for the others you've de-shadowed as well?

Also, what the poopsmith is going on with that Shadow Wailmer? Pointy fangs? Really?

I think I'd side with Magma as well, if only because I think Greevil is more likely to have a balanced team, and therefore be a more interesting opponent.

Duplication would be ideal... but also time-consuming. And confusing, since we'd be switching back and forth between increasingly-divergent teams.

I'd vote to go Magma, because Lawful Stupid is still preferable to Neutral Evil. And besides, the sooner we fight Shadow Groudon's owners, the sooner we'll fight the shadowy legendary itself and get a chance to burn our entire supply of Ultra Balls.

I forgot . I think they learn their birth moves upon being cured, since Eevee did learn either Tackle or Tail Whip and Sand-Attack(goddamn it, I might have to re-read it again) as well as already having something else. Porygon learned a few things, and also had Magnet Rise. I don't remember Mawile learning anything at all, and she had a few useless moves like Growl and Tail Whip(she has a tail?) plus Crunch. I guess it doesn't announce moves it had from levels up to that point.

If you look closely, all the Shadow Pokčmon have a slightly different sprite. It's noticable in the scene I did for Mawile, her arm is lowered, and only one eye is visible.

Magma has mostly been using Fire and Water, Cipher has mostly been using Dark and Ghost. My team can fight Fire and Dark, but might stuggle a bit with Water and Ghost, so either one could be a decent fight, though I might assume fighting Greevil with be a 2-on-1 with Maxie.

Duplication would be ideal... but also time-consuming. And confusing, since we'd be switching back and forth between increasingly-divergent teams.

Yeah, I'd rather not carry on with what is essentially two games at once.
