Author Topic: Do we know if DF2014 expected to have performance improvements?  (Read 2400 times)

Sorry if this has been covered before. I'm very excited about the coming update, but it makes me a little concerned about the great many things being added which one would think would require even more resources to sim the game world.

Since it's common for performance issues to kill forts as much as any source of Fun, it made me think. So, are performance and system resource usage improvements a part of the update as well?

I don't think a huge change in game performance will be noticeable. Most changes don't directly concern fortress mode, but, depending on when history is simulated, the changing of seasons/years will probably be slower. That said, this update also brings rewrites to old parts of the code that weren't fit for his purposes anymore. (Which probably translates into improvements, assuming that Toady's coding skill goes up with time)

It's pretty rare for the large releases to bring performance improvements, though I believe Toady tends to try to get the performance vaguely into the realm of the prior release. Performance improvements are more the realm of the bugfix releases that happen after the large releases.

Don't worry, skills can go over Legendary Codedwarf+1 even higher with time. Toady's probably between +5 and +10 by now, one can only wonder how big his skill gain be in the next ten or so years. Sadly, he's the only one working on it, so there's no one else to have the code menacing with spikes of bugfixes and adorned with optimizations, which means a lot of his time is also invested on raising the codefixerdwarf and optimidwarf (Optimus Dwarf? Urist Prime?) skillsets, making the entire process slower.

I would be very surprised if the initial DF2014 release didn't have worse performance due to bugs and lack of optimization. The bugfix updates, though? Who knows.

It would be hilarious in a multi-layered dungeon if companions tried to predict where you're going.

"Ooh! I bet you're going to jump onto that ledge up there!"

This is exactly why Toady has said that dwarves will not jump or climb for most tasks. It'll help dwarves get out of holes, but not take a shortcut up the rock shoot. Likewise invaders will only consider climbing and jumping when they are near the open entrance to your fort.

This is exactly why Toady has said that dwarves will not jump or climb for most tasks. It'll help dwarves get out of holes, but not take a shortcut up the rock shoot. Likewise invaders will only consider climbing and jumping when they are near the open entrance to your fort.
He mentioned something about goblins hopping around his test fort, IIRC.
