How essential will all the rulebooks and stuff be for actually participating in the game? I'd like to try and play sometime if there's a free slot, but all I've got is DnD Essentials "Heroes of the Fallen Lands" and DnD Essentials "Dungeon Master's Kit" and both of which I believe are from DnD 3. I don't even have a DnD Player's Handbook, yet. If I find one for cheap and have the spare money I might get it, but otherwise I don't have much as far as DnD gear goes.

Did I mention I'm a total DnD noob. I am.

Are there adequate resources available for free online a player could use instead of all the official paper books and all?

Heh, I picked that one to ask about at random, too. Okay, so here's what I'm thinking. Is this acceptable?

As long as someone has one, you'll cope. 4e can be fairly rule heavy.

Also, PTW. If necessary, I can offer advice when I have time (exams... bleh) since I've played 4e before and know the rules reasonably.

Edit:

So how many exploits/powers does the warlord get? Because there's a lot more  listed than i think they'll have.

Two at-wills, one encounter, one daily. Goes for Nerjin, too.

-snip-
...That is one great backstory.

Thanks, I have my moments. Felt a bit cliché to me, to be honest. Then again, I *am* a halfing rogue, so maybe clichés aren't all bad.'

Any timeline on when we might actually start?

Wait, are we supposed to come up with detailed backgrounds or what? I just kinda went with the generic things in the character creator.

@USEC_OFFICER: Yeah, I tend to... overdo things by accident, sometimes.

Excellent, I'll be watching closely.

Not that detailed. A coherent background explaining why you are in this town would be enough.

We are starting as soon as Tawarochir and Objective get their sheets ready.

When did they state their interest? I'd say give one of their spots to Giglamesh if too much more time passes. Reservations are nice, but you can't exactly deny someone else a table at your fancy restaurant forever because someone else is late for their time. Especially not when it stops everyone else from eating their food as well. [Awful metaphor ahoy!]

Yeah, that makes sense. I'll give them one more day.

Ironically enough I'm sorta dropping out of the forums for a little while, so... Since my character is a sniper/assassin guy and we already have another rogue, I guess you guys can just go on without me. When I come back it shouldn't be too hard for me to find a place into the party. Just so everyone knows.

I've got a rough draft of my dude. Need to make sure I'm not missing anything and then put it all on an official sheet.

I'm unfamiliar with the classes of 4e. I assume a dwarf slayer will be ok? Slayer's basically a fighter with a huge 2-hander instead of a sword and shield.

Also, what's the scale of the world like? How big are the islands in comparison to real land masses? Are the islands huge continent sized or smaller like Australia or even smaller?

I guess I'll just directly expy Vince over here, but make him an elf or something.

This is what I got so far, I have no idea how spells work in 4th Edition.

Well, here's my character sheet. Named for my latest DF character, heavily laden with references of a certain kind DwArfY will get.

I kinda feel guilty for ripping the image off the internets but oh well

You said Melora is OK for a deity, right? She seems the most "in tune" with ad'Ucim here. Also, it's OK to use an old 3.5 edition alignment, right? Lawful neutral is more descriptive than "unaligned".

This is what I got so far, I have no idea how spells work in 4th Edition.

You can use all the cantrips (Ghost Sound, Light, Mage Hand, Prestidigitation) plus two at-wills, one encounter, and one daily.

Tawarochir and Spehss, in 4e a Slayer is a Great Weapon Fighter, so the class is just 'Fighter'. It's only the weapon/feats/skills that change.
