A thousand days of battle [6/6]
« on: June 10, 2014, 08:48:40 am »

It is war.
It has been war for quite some time.
For such a long time, in fact, that nobody quite remembers what they're fighting for anymore. Sure, we all know how it started, and it seemed like a good idea at the time - but when you lack tobacco and just lost your second buddy to gangrene, these reasons seem... Distant. Silly. Insane, really.
But we can't stop now - they are the enemy, after all! And we have suffered too much to accept a stalemate; anything but a victory would dishonor our fallen, invalidate their sacrifice.

You all meet in the waiting room before the General's office. You can't imagine why he'd specifically call for you all: Such a wild bunch, and certainly not elite force members or high-ranking officers. What will he tell you to do?

Arguably he's already a progressive, just one in the style of an enlightened Kaiser.
I'm going to do the smart thing here and disengage. This isn't a hill I paticularly care to die on.

The way you want us to write up character sheets reminds me of Other Skylines. So, we write it up as six lines describing the character?

Other Skylines?
But yeah, just a couple of lines about where you come from and where you're going. Nothing overly fancy.

Free Tabletop RPG system I used in RL at some point.
Anyway, here's my character:
Zachary Adams is a 23 year old doctor. He wants to end the war as soon as possible, and is a pacifist, but decided that more people will survive if he used his considerable talents as a medic to help injured soldiers. He absolutely despises those who believe the war should continue, going so far as to refuse to provide them treatment unless absolutely necessary. The reason he decided to become a doctor was having his father die during the war due to a shortage of medics. He is also rather skilled with a shotgun, but doesn't use it very often. He is British.
((What do you mean, where you come from? You haven't listed any countries.))

John Sinclair, a 30 year old engineer.

He didn't want to join the army, but got drafted anyway, and decided to play the cards he was given. That one time he allegedly he shot a commanding officer in the knee. Due to lack of any actual proof to the fact, however, John is facing dishonourable discharge, not a firing squad. Which is just fine by him, really. Only now "some fucker high up, up being a shorthand for head up his commanding arse" decided that John is about to meet the General, instead.

Doesn't care either way about the war, doesn't care if he shoots people or fixes their gear, he just does what's necessary to survive. Cold, calculating, always looking for an edge. Past times include swearing while smoking a pipe, and shooting people who might want to kill him, directly or not.

There's bombers, and tanks, and that kind of stuff, but the strategic situation has remained stagnant for the past few years, leading to the same sense of pointlessness that was widespread in the trenches of WWI. An excuse for extensive use of the 'War is Hell' trope, really.

E. Herm
Fortification Specialist (Engineer)
20 years old
Rather attractive with Curly black hair
He keeps quiet about his past, but he is definitely educated.
Quite good at his job, has a knack for it.
He seems almost apathetic about the whole thing.

Alexei Kuzmich Lurov
27 year old
Infantryman
Alexei was a son of a farmer, one of 14 children. He was drafted as soon as he reached the age of 21. He is not educated very well, not like his is smart overall. But hу is definetly a tough-looking fellow - thanks to his habit of working in field with his dad and brothers. He used to keep generic mood all along, until the news reached him that his village was burned to ash with all the inhabitants. He frustrated hard then, then drank as much as a soldier can, being in trench. After he recovered, he turned his grief and hatred against the foes.

Objective, there's five by my count. I've made two characters in case a female character doesn't suit the game world (which she might not, if it's based on WW1 trench warfare.

Okay, let's get this started...
Spoiler: bawr - John Sinclair (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Again_Dejavu - E. Herm (click to show/hide)

You are called into the General's office.
"Ah, finally - the group I requested. Let's not waste our time: You have all been recommended because you've shown that you're adept at avoiding death - your own" - he looks at Sinclair - "or that of others. As you know, the war has reached a stalemate; it has been decided to break through this unfortunate state by interfering with enemy supply lines, specifically by moving small, stealthy groups behind enemy lines to engage in acts of sabotage. You are one of the first of these groups. You'll have noted the presence of two engineers: Your first mission will be the destruction of a bridge, about fifty kilometers from here. Explosives and equipment will be supplied to you when you leave; further instructions will be transmitted by radio. I wish you good luck; I'd very much like you to return in one piece."
Speaking the last words, he winks; but it's not quite clear if he meant Alice or Dany...

Spoiler: Skills etc. (click to show/hide)
