No offense, but I though that the second biggest point we made in that discussion was that coilguns don't fire quickly (compared to any other projectile weapon)? Small ammunition =/= high rate of fire. The point was that ammo limits aren't meaningful issues for magnetic accelerators, power supply and RoF are. Again: Zero issues with high-accuracy, low-RoF, moderate damage coilguns. The only issue with the way they were was that the ammo supply was unreasonably small for no particular reason.

One high-pen, moderate damage shot per turn is both realistic and balanced; giving us a total of 20 chances to cause damage per battle is anti-fun when everyone else has hundreds, especially when it doesn't make sense. I'd totally be in agreement if they were 200mm howitzers or something, lol. :|

I'm almost asleep, so that might have something to do with it.

And truly, the ammo has not the slightest semblance to reality, it's all about game balance. (Which is why the Sarin filled machine gun has so little bullets, for one.) Also, last time I checked you had the most ammo relatively of all mechs.

On a side note, your coilgun's aren't, by far, moderate damage. They can penetrate most armor, and will do significant impact damage if they don't penetrate.

Edit: Well, apparently you don't. My bad. Still, battles aren't going to last 20 turns. Especially with the firepower most people seem to be carrying, 5 will be about it.

This was one of the main things I was worried about. I mean, as long as we have the assurance that that won't happen for the first couple missions and we'll have the opportunity to make upgrades, it's all good. I was just concerned that sooner or later we'd be fighting actual battles against other groups of enemy mechs that won't just keel over and die, in which case the two of us will basically get our twenty shots and then have to keep running away because we can't hurt anything. Which is cool if it comes at the end of a long string of battles or because we wasted ammo, not because we have almost no ammo.  :P

You should never run out of ammo from one battle. Ever. If you do, it's doubtful that it was truly a single battle, or it's doubtful your gun is functioning properly.

What if it was a very long battle, perhaps getting yourself cornered and you need to wait for a chance to break out?

Yes, I'm actually working that now. It includes some baddies to shoot, some civilians to shoot (or not) , some cargo crates to shoot, a floor (not to shoot, you don't want to go to space)

On a side note, this game uses a sort of a negative roll system. Basically, I roll for the difficulty of the task, and you have to combine traits, equipment and skills where applicable to ensure that your skill thingy is above the task difficulty.

For example, if you want to jump, shoot the enemy in mid air (targeting his weak spot for massive damage) and then use your antigrav/jumpjets and the knockback of those weapons to dodge an incoming missile, all just to impress an NPC love interest* , then you can pretty much justify using all your rolls in one massive roll of awesomeness.

You will also meet an early grave.

*Note, I'm not doing NPC love interest.

Maybe inertial gravity is cheaper on large-scale things?

...though you realize that technically the cargo is standing still, and you're moving.
