Wait, So if a character has DEF 30 and RES 30 that would be

+6DR for physical
+6DR for Magical

Correct?

Here's where I'm a bit confused about damage resistance as a statistic, what role does it really serve compared to HP? I mean, it's always seemed like something that was difficult to balance since it has to be better than HP (to balance the fact that it only covers one out of two damage types and may be bypassed) but also not overpowered to the point where someone could just sink points into both defenses and be better off than if had sunk those points into HP.

Damage Resistance's main role is to serve to differentiate hard targets from soft targets.

Hard targets require single strike penetrating attacks to damage, but typically have low HP compared to their counterparts past that point; Hard, but brittle.

Soft targets have large amounts of HP, but are less affected by heavy-hitter single-target or penetration attacks. Thick, but soft.

Defence already IS better than Health. As PN said, Health blocks 3 damage - once. Defence meanwhile blocks damage again and again - summed up over the whole course of the battle. For a longer engagement, defence is superior

True, but now we actually have someone to heal people. People can also get easily nuked down when they have low defenses. But even then, defense is still pretty shit.

I did the math on this a while back, if you remember, and the fact of the matter is that as it stands currently, you are wrong. Defense has a chance to block a point of damage. Combine that with the fact that most battles last 3 to 5 turns?

Def and Res, right now, suck.

well, also too few people actually wear armor. Magic damage gets boosted, and everyone who fights in melee has weapons to greatly increase damage output. Nobody cares much about armor, only Kyle has really significant armor, and Icarus armor by now is also pretty significant. Too few people have gotten upgrades to their equipment since the game started

Kaiser too, since he did try to make some armour for Dalia at one point. Admittedly she never wore it afterwards, but minor details.

Player-created equipment is usually just a bunch of +3 items at this point in the game. If you want to make good ones, level up your magic and skill (or just skill if you have equipment).
