Depends what X is.

Smurf has returned. He's also hungover and on his phone, so take mercy.

X being a character trait, a quirk or behavioral anomaly. Such as being evil. If they truly cannot help themselves by any means(not just need therapy or somesuch), are they still sapient?

Well for starters, what IS evil? Even human perspectives vary, not to mention that in this setting there are plenty of nonhuman entities some of whom have different morals. Are they able to choose whose morals they are violating or are they just locked into one?

I'd think that sapience and sentience are unrelated to compulsion. I don't see how a compulsion would affect that, it may affect free-will but not self-awareness or judgement.

Well for, starters, don't try pulling the definitionist card. It's not a logical fallacy, but it's still not relevant, and it's still not the point.

My view is that free will is directly tied into sapience and sentience(particularly because judgement and free will are very closely tied). If you cannot even control your thoughts, I would not consider you sapient(what's the difference between sapience and sentience again?).

I'm just wondering how much control they have over that concept seeing as it determine show much control it has over their actions. Sentience is self-awareness, subjectivity and whatnot. Sapience is acting with appropriate judgement.

I was under the assumption that the character knew what they were doing was considered evil and performs it out of compulsion. As in, it does not affect their thoughts, only actions. If it does indeed affect their thoughts, then it's a question of whether or not that trait can be distinguished from them or not.
