The Grim Reaper
It was a Friday night at the White's household. James parents were
out of town on business which meant the young college student
pretty much had the run of the place. He was lazing around in his
room, lying in the swivel chair before his laptop and casually browsing
the internet for...a certain breed of stories.
"Hmm...Alien attack on the streets of downtown Tokyo. Three more
magical girls appear to counter said threat. Identities still unknown,
verdict is still out...typical...but can't say I blame them for being skeptical
about our kind either.." He laid back in his chair and ran a hand through
his hair with a sigh.
"Master," Shining Star lit up from her place on his table, getting
the young man's attention,"Perhaps it would be wise to try and
establish contact with these other magical beings? You can use all
the allies you can get."
The young man folded his arms and glanced up at the ceiling for
a moment in deep thought before shaking his head,"It's a good idea,
Star, but...I don't know if it would be right. I mean, these aliens are
launching attacks all over the world. Those girls have their hands full
fighting their own battles...there's no reason to add our own burden
on top of theirs."
"A logical answer," Star conceded,"But...promise me Master...that if
worse comes to worst...if there comes a time you feel you can't go on...promise
that you will seek out help..remember, you don't have to carry the burden
of the world on your own."
James White blinked at the surge of emotion in her voice before giving
a small smile,"Alright, I promise." Suddenly, he heard voices outside his
door, glancing out the window he spotted a pile of people on the street,
pointing upwards at something in the sky.
"What the..." Deciding to check it out, he grabbed Star's Core Device off
the table and ran out, only to spot a pile of what looked like flaming meteors
descending from the sky to land in the harbour with a loud splash one after
the other.
"Ah geez...they sent quite a few this time, didn't they?" James muttered
more to himself than anyone else as he ran into the nearest dark alley and
transformed into Noire, spreading her wings and flying off to where the
"meteors" were landing.
As she approached the landing spot, she quickly realized the water was
receding, giving the armor-plated lizard-like beasts room to stretch their
legs as they left the dropships. There were...quite a few, let's put it that
way. Couple dozen...maybe a hundred or so...a small army's worth...
Walking among them were larger mechanized titans, covered in bulky
metallic armor and carrying huge weapons like maces and axes. Far fewer
in number but much more menacing as a compromise.
Floating up above the roving mob were several massive, building-sized
orb-like structures with kalediscope designs in their eyes along with dozens
more lizard-like aliens only now these had scaly wings to help them fly.
If they got into the town...it would be a slaughter for sure.
Noire stood there, facing the army head-on, reaching up to put down her
hood as her eyes blazed with power,"...Star...are you with me?"
The device transformed into its cannon mode,"To the very end, my master."
Putting her hand on the handle, she took a deep breath...and sprang into
action, taking aim at the army as the nozzle charged up with bright blue
energy,"Sacred Flare."
The weapon went off with a bang, a bunch of bangs really, the loudness
echoing through the night as several blue comet-like projectiles erupted
from her weapon's nozzle and streaked through the air, and each impacted
an alien soldier with enough force to pierce their armor and blast them into
chunky salsa.
Needless to say, this caught the other's attention as, upon spotting the lone
magical girl, rose their weapons and retaliated with a hail of laser fire. The
night lit up as crimson lasers came forth in a deadly rain.
Noire rushed forward, using her enhanced speed to maneuver out of the
way of the laser fire, her cannon letting loose as she returned fire, each
blast easily taking a soldier apart. One of the flying creatures above dropped
a bomb on her from above, blasting her off her feet.
She went into a diving roll and came up in time to take aim and shoot down
at least three more soldiers before one of the winged beasts swooped down
on her. Springing off her heel, she flipped over it before unloading a shotgun-style
blast into the back of its noggin before whirling around to shoot down two more.
Landing on the ground, she found herself besieged by about half a dozen soldiers
at one time, led by one of the mechanized titans. It roses its massive war hammer
and swung down with earth-shattering force. She catapulted herself off the ground,
her weapon splitting into digital parts before rearranging into a large buster sword.
Swinging it with all her might, she bisected the giant right down the middle,
sending circuitry and oil flying in all directions. She sensed a soldier coming from
behind so she ducked under their blade and swung her own, cutting them in half.
She then whirled about and cut down another before using the sword as a pole
vault to kick a soldier in the face.
She then thrust it through the chest of another enemy before swinging it hard enough
to generate an outburst of razor wind which blasted back the soldiers still
surrounding her.
All of a sudden, explosions went off all around her, forcing her to shield herself,
only to have another titan come from nowhere and send her flying through the
air with a single giant fist. A pile of chains descended from the creatures up above,
wrapping around her ankles and wrists.
Noire then found herself being yanked in all directions, causing her to wince
and gnarl her teeth as she struggled and strained against her binds. In response,
her captors swung her through the air and slammed her on the ground like a
fly swatter, before lifting her up and doing so again, then dragging her along the
field kicking up dust and debris before letting one of the giant eyes fire off a
powerful laser.
The blast hit with the force of a meteor, sending the magical girl back down to
earth, bouncing along it several times before crashing hard into a mound of rock.
...But when the smoke cleared, the dark-haired girl picked herself up and dusted
herself off before locking eyes with the mob. Conjuring her sword, she began calmly
walking towards them. Some firing off lasers to try and stop her advance, only for
a barrier to form up and stop them.
She put two hands on her buster sword...and it split down the middle, giving her
two sleek broadswords instead,"Boost Drive." A surge of energy came forth and
she vanished in the blink of an eye.
The next thing the surrounding soldiers knew, they found themselves being cut
down left and right by some invisible force. Only telltale sign anything was there
would be the brief sounds of swords swinging and the screams of the soldiers as
they found their limbs being sliced off, or their cohorts seeing heads fly off, or
mysterious wounds appearing from nowhere.
Noire reappeared in front of one of the titans, the same one who had punched
her. As it went to do so again, she dashed between its legs and backflipped onto
its back before springing off again. As it wondered what she was doing...she snapped
her fingers.
A beeping noise could be heard as a blue marking formed on its back...about a
dozen orbs of light formed around the beast before going off with a very loud
bang, consuming him in an inferno.
From out of the fire, the dark magical girl emerged, spectral wings forming as
she jetted into the sky at high speeds. The eyes and the flying monsters continuing
to rain down laser fire but unable to do much as she either evaded each shot
or simply used a barrier to push through it.
"I will protect them...the ones I love...the town I grew up in...the people who have
yet to realize their dreams...I will!" Noire thought to herself as Star lit up once
again,"Lance Mode!"
Star split apart once again, only to reform into a staff with a very large, arrow-head
shaped blade on the end, covered in neon blue lines. Taking hold of the weapon,
the girl took aim at the mob up above her as energy gathered within her partner.
"Divine Crash!" With her blade charged to its peak, she streaked forward at high
speeds. The flying beasts continued to hammer away with lasers and bombs but
her defensive field was barely even fazed, and so, like an streak of pure light, she
stabbed through each one of the aerial menaces, punching giant holes through
their forms. Her laser-like streak smashing through each one like a hot knife
through butter.
Zipping towards one of the giant eyes, she slammed into it hard enough to trigger
shockwaves through the whole area. Pushing forward with all her might, she urged
Shining Star forward, until finally they pierced right through the thing and out the
other side.
A roar of agony came from the machine as explosions went off through its entire
structure and it fell towards the earth in flames. The whole thing landed on a
squad of soldiers, taking out two birds with one stone. Narrowly evading a laser,
she turned to see about a dozen flyers coming in fast so she zipped off into the
sky even faster than before, her lance morphing into twin swords.
Connecting the ends of the handles, she created a Magitek Bow. Whirling around,
the bladed edges cut through those who got a bit too close for comfort. Drawing
back on the string, she began letting loose with energy arrows, creating a lethal
storm of projectiles that skewered many of her attackers. Kicking a flyer, she
used him as a surfboard to descend from the sky.
With her makeshift surfboard, she skidded along the ground, her weapon morphing
again into a sinister scythe. Pumping in some power, she twirled it around, slicing and
dicing those on her sides and in front of her. Using the back of her weapon, she
whacked one of them hard enough to send them flying into two others before bringing
her blade around again to cut down yet another enemy.
Loading in another burst, she twirled around with her blade, becoming a literal
tornado that proceeded to tear through the army without any signs of mercy.
Several of the mechs, seeing no signs of her stopping, unloaded an artillery barrage.
Missiles, lasers, napalm bombs, gunfire, etc. All of it fell on top of the magical girl
and hit with enough force to level an entire city block.
Everyone watched the cloud of smoke...only for it to part and reveal Noire still
standing there, looking more annoyed at having to cast one of her Barrier spells
in self-defense. The masses roared in defiance and began to go all out in their
charge.
Re-shaping her weapon into cannon mode, she took aim as it suddenly began
to change form once more. Becoming larger, bulkier, new sections shooting
out and attaching themselves as the barrel split open, only to become several
multi-headed gun barrels. Now she wielded a large gatling cannon,"Corona
Barrage."
The weapon came to life as it let loose with a non-stop barrage of magic
bullets and soldiers started falling, riddled with holes and missing vital sections.
Even the mechanized titans didn't last too long despite their use as meat shields
as each round punched holes through their armor, in some cases blowing off
their heads. Sure enough, the intended slaughter had been turned on themselves.
Two, four, eight, ten, twenty, the number of fallen troops kept piling up...but
still they kept coming. Even with their numbers greatly reduced, a fair number
broke through the storm of gunfire and went on the attack. Noire kicked off
the ground and switched back to her cannon mode, releasing a hail of laser
blasts down on them.
Deciding to start wrapping this up, she switched to her buster sword,"Azure Blade!"
Fueling it with her own mana reserves, she slammed the sword into the earth,
causing a field of large energy swords to erupt from the ground all around her,
impaling the soldiers from all directions and lifting them from the ground. Dozens
were skewered by this one attack.
Taking a deep breath to try and stop her panting, drops of sweat falling from
her face, Noire glanced upwards to those who still remained...which were
significantly fewer than the mobs from when this started.
Those who remained actually appeared a bit hesitant to continue now,
some even looking ready to book it rather than get slaughtered by this...thing.
This...Grim Reaper.
The remaining spheres floated into a triangle format before channeling
energy between them to fire a trinity of blasts down at her from above.
Sure enough, the shots fired, creating a massive explosion...only for a
blue meteor to streak out of the dust cloud and crash into one of the
giant eyes.
Noire lifted her arm as both her gauntlets fused into one larger glove,"Azure Breaker!"
She smashed her fist into it and let the turbine start up, triggering a massive
cyclone of energy to emit from the backside. As her hair blue in the wind, she
smashed through the giant eye before turning and charging up even more
power.
"Sacred Strike!" Spreading her wings, she created a trinity of rings before
her, leading down to the second machine which had already begun charging
up one last laser. She descended from the sky, passing through each ring as
her leg lit up with bright blue light that only grew stronger by the moment.
The eye fired its super laser only for said attack to splinter off as the
Sacred Strike pushed downward through the beam, even when it doubled
its power output, it still couldn't match the strength of this attack. Finally,
the kick connected, blasting a giant hole through it as the remnants of the
soldiers were being crushed by the two fallen machines.
Noire stood on one knee, panting rapidly as she tried to gather herself.
"Master...there is still one left." Star reminded her user.
"I know.." She glared up at the one remaining eye and the handful of
leftover titan mechs and soldiers,"Just you and me now.."
The eye in response, sprouted a pile of tentacles from it which reached
down and began ensnaring the remaining soldiers who screamed as
they found themselves being eaten within the folds of the appendages,
being used as material to create a large muscular, armor-plated body
for the eye...becoming a cyclops...one big enough to reduce his town
to rubble by the end of the night.
Yet, Noire refused to back down,"...You still don't get it, do you?" She
stood up and began walking forward,"This is the town I grew up in...the
place where I made all kinds of memories...both good and bad..it doesn't
matter how many of your kind come...I won't let you lay a hand on the
place I call home."
Her weapon resumed its cannon mode as she took aim at the giant.
"No matter how big you get...or what kind of weapons you wield...I
won't ever give up...and I won't stop fighting for what I believe in...Shining Star?"
"Acknowledged," The AI Core said as the cannon suddenly grew and
runic lines lit up along it, the giant readying one last blast.
As Shining Star powered up for one final attack, runic symbols formed
in the air around the magical girl,"Celestial Buster...charging...10 %...20 percent.."
Noire closed her eyes as she readied herself,"40 Percent...52 percent...64 percent.."
"71 percent.." She steadied her hand on the trigger, it was almost time,"81
percent..."
"I know you can hear me.." She mentioned to the giant..or the one controlling
it,"Let this be a warning to you, and anyone else who tries to take our home.."
"100 percent. Master, we're ready."
"Celestial Buster! Fire!" The cannon finished charging, letting loose a ridiculously
massive beam of blue light, joined by a number of other beams which spiraled
together. The cyclops tried to fire but was easily overpowered by the monstrous
attack.
It was engulfed by the blast and carried high into the sky, away from the town,
where it gradually dissolved piece by piece. After clearing the clouds, it broke
apart completely before the sky was lit up by a massive explosion of light.
With the deed done, James/Noire collapsed to her knees and cradled her arm
as Sacred Star changed back to Brace form, out of breath, her body filled with
fatigue and strained, yet still she remained sharp,"Master, I'm detecting drastic
loss in mana levels, are you alright?"
"I...I'm fine...just..just tell me..is it over.." Noire managed to gasp out.
Star was silent for a moment, scanning the surrounding area before chiming,"Yes.
The vast majority of the enemy force has been defeated, the few who remain are
already retreating. Well done, Master."
The girl allowed herself a small smile despite her exhaustion,"Thanks...Star..couldn't
have done it without you though..." She stared outward as water began to flow back
into the harbour, some of it splashing against her boots,"Do you...think those guys
will try something like this again?"
"That, I do not know," Star admitted,"At the very least, they may think twice before
launching such a massive assault again, so you can rest for a while. Infact, I'd recommend
heading home right now."
"Right, thanks," Having gained back some strength in her legs, she got up and
walked away from the harbor as police sirens closed in, disappearing into the night...
