Since creating custom modded worlds through raw editing is as much a core part of DFs concept as procedural generation, I doubt predefined plants or creatures will ever be removed entirely.  It will be like titans and megabeasts: objects defined in the raws will exist, and procedurally generated ones will be added on to those.  In short, plump helmets are here to stay.
