Before you read on, my dear reader, I would like you to acknowledge that I am a noob at DF and because of it this revelation worries me. So far I've managed to make it past 2 years in fortress mode and past... well, a season in adventure mode. Back to the topic at hand, though:

Embarked in an apparently cold biome (embark mode said it was temperate but, well, look at the screenshot taken in spring.) Notice the highwood trees, which, according to the wiki only grow in savage biomes. Now notice the feather trees. Have I discovered the rift in biome timespace? Am I about to fight Armok? AM I GOING TO FIND OUT WHAT THE CIRCUS IS?

Screenshot-

Probably not, as my longest lasting fort ended when I failed to meet the needs of my mason. Who was a miner. Who went berserk and killed 3 of his comrades before finally getting his brain torn by the other miner via pickaxe to the temple. Who also went insane soon after, and drowned himself while stark raving mad. The remaining dwarves were almost solely crafters, so if the tantrum aftershocks didn't kill them then not being able to support the food industry did. I'd like to mention that this all happened because of internal affairs. No goblin ambush. No caravan bugging out, going nuts and having its guards wreck my civ dwarves. Just... not having... enough stone. DON'T ASK.

Back to the new embark: I'm honestly very curious as to why there are both savage and good plants here when according to embark the surrounding biomes of the Joyous Wild biome I partially embarked on was calm had flux and both shallow and deep metals, plus neither of them had Aquifers... I couldn't resist! And now I'm probably going to pay the price... somehow.

But yeah, why is this happening?    :o

...I'm going to go lie down for a bit. DF snow is white. Like, really white. Like, my eyes are starting to hurt-white.

The snow will thaw when it changes spring. It won't be too long. Did you check F1, and etc about the area you embarked on?

Well RIP Urist McMiner and the others. You might want Dwarf Therapist if you want to avoid some tedious things later. Also make 3 of your starting 7 farmers.

No idea really.

You can change the tile set if you don't like the vanilla tiles. There's alot out there.

Im sorry if I wasn't all that helpful. I just have no idea why your embark is so strange.

Edit: Also welcome to DF. May Armok have mercy on your soul. (Welcome to Bay12 too)  :)

Because Joyous Wilds is a good and savage biome.

It's not a terribly big deal, although you may have somewhat nastier animals to deal with.

Biomes can be a mixture of evil, neutral, good and serene, neutral and savage. If you want a full list you can consult http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2012:Surroundings

F1 doesn't seem to do anything ingame so I'm assuming you're referring to the embark view/menu. I've already got dwarf therapist and 2 proficient growers, so once I get the basic areas mined out I'll make one of the miners a dabbling farmer. Anyways, no need to apologize, as I'm considering building a tomb outside made only of highwood and feather logs so that everyone who ends their lives in this fort before it properly crumbles will be eternally resting within this odd matchup of flora.

She's a pegasus. It's not cannibalism. Technically.

You sir/ma'am are coming across as very dwarf-y. Splitting hairs of the technicality of cannibalism just seems to me like something that would only happen here.

Disclaimer: This is meant to be complimentary as was my other post. Sort of like you have been promoted from human to dwarf in my eyes.

If you see any unicorns, have your dwarves send their regards to Armok and prepare their diddly holes. Wild unicorns can wreck your dwarves up.

The sporting way to hunt unicorns is either buck naked, or with ballista bolts.
Or both.

Dwarf fortress in 50 words: You start with seven alcoholic, manic-depressive dwarves. You build a fortress in the wilderness where EVERYTHING tries to kill you, including your own dwarves. Usually, your chief imports are immigrants, beer, and optimism. Your chief exports are misery, limestone violins, forest fires, elf tallow soap, and carved kitten bone.

I leave you for one night and you already change the topic to narwhal horse bones or something... anyway, if this is also a savage biome then should I get a rudimentary military squad by the end of the year ingame?

Oh.

Okay.

Wiki's the reason I made this topic. Well, that and not reading up on Joyous Wilds since I assumed they were fine and dandy.

On a brighter note -(or darker considering what it looked like previously-)

SO I'M NOT COLOR BLIND!

F1 does actually have a fort-mode function; it's the default keybind for your first zoom hotkey, which is always set to center on your wagon upon embark.
