I'll be away for the weekend. Also, I want to suggest adding a single level of masonry to the trapsmith, for initial use.

Sounds like a decent setup. Should allow us plenty of flexibility for other skills if we choose but i feel this is a pretty rounded starting setup. As for items I'm thinking:

2 copper pickaxe
1 copper battle axe
1 anvil
30 meat
30 of each booze
10 of each seed
5 of each fish
10 plump helmets
2 hens
1 rooster
2 female dogs
1 male dog
2 female cats
1 male cat

this of course is just a basic quick list i use for most embarks, should leave some points leftover for whatever else we need and we might not even need alot of this list depending on what we finally decide for the starting seven and our beginning goals. I AM terribly partial to my dogs for both pets and war training, i have a habit of assigning dogs to important dwarves and dwarves who spend alot of time outdoors as a sort of first line of defence if anything should go awry. i also enjoy the idea of supplementing early food stocks with eggs and once a few batches hatch the offspring are off to slaughter :) we shouldnt have any issues with food or booze for the first few years, at least until the migrants and bloody nobles start eating us out of house and home...any thoughts or suggestions? PS enjoy the weekend Raijin!

EDIT: As a side note i did a test starting build with the aforementioned setup. It worked out fairly well and i had secure lodgings, stockpiles, workshops, beds, kitchen and still setup by the end of the first season. Nearly everything i had designated had been dug out, a trade depot had been established and dogs were trained into war dogs. trees had been cut and plants had been gathered. I had an issue with idle dwarves during the first little bit until i had my humble beginnings actually dug out and plots for farming established however. Any ideas how to potentially combat this? we could always mess around with labors early on but that always requires changing them back. any thoughts?

Do you have enough points for some extra wood or stone? You could build a mason and carpenter workshop and have your two growers pumping out some standard stuff while your skilled miners and woodcutter get the needed beginning tasks done.

not a bad idea, we could build ourselves a nice perimeter wall and keep the beginning workshops above ground, hopefully the buggers will use them every so often to prevent cave adaptation...at least with some of them...XD

If you haven't decided on overseers yet , I'd love to have a turn as one!

Several comments:

If possible, take sheep. If there are no pig tails, this becomes a necessity. Possibly replace the cats with sheep. Catsplosions are a bit more !FUN! than regular !fun!.

The initial defense will be based on ballistas and crossbowdwarves. This is what I always do, and if I take year one (which I do not mind at all) the defense will show this.

List of Overseers (besides me) that will be used. Due to popular demand, I will use three other people. This will not change, unless a lack of people appear. So top three are the overseers, but if one leaves / doesn't pitch, then someone else will be pulled in, if they're still interested.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Initial Rotation (Negotiable)
1  Myself
2  christopher1006
3  FallenAngel
4  XxHyde840xX
5  FallenAngel
6  Myself
7  XxHyde840xX
8  christopher1006

I do not want a set rotation. I will randomize it as much as possible, to ensure that everyone plays before and after everyone else. Removes patterns, increases both chaos and !FUN!.

Sounds good to me. We should probably get a bona-fide setup for our starting seven and dorfing in order soon as it seems Toady and Tarn are working steadily on the release. So stoked for this! If possible I wouldn't mind being our hunter/animal trainer :D i think it'll give me a good change of pace between a sort of fort life narrative with some adventure and excitement since ill be spending alot of time outdoors and with the war-beasts. Once we get a new crop of hunters/animal trainers I could always be drafted into the Marksdwarf squad as well. Im excited to see what our defences look like after year 1 Raijin, i usually focus on the standard moat/hallway of death/dogs everywhere tactic for the first few years until i can just slap migrant waves into entire military units, sometimes its successful, sometimes not so much lol

"Bona-fide setup for our starting seven and dorfing" and technical stuffs.

Starting Seven:

Dorfing:

Technical stuffs:
I suggest we all take a week after release. Get used to whatever is new, help with bug testing, see where things go. If there are too many bugs, we take it from there. Otherwise, one week from DF2014 release, I'll start up a new world, work through a few embarks, and then do this thing.

I’d like to join this please. I’ll probably take the combat specialist if possible.

I'd like to be the miner/rock crafter. That way I can comment on the ridiculous tons of mugs I will be making in my year to get the crap everyone needs before someone inevitably pisses off the elves.

Some practicalities:
No longer than a week a turn. You have three days to accept your turn, however these are included in your week playtime. Ingame you can either go for a year, or two years if you fit it into your week.

Fun things:
I really can't wait to see what this will bring. I know that my playstyle is vastly different from everyone else's it seems (from the commentary).

Seeing as I will most likely irk everyone else with how I do things, I will go with the Expedition Leader, or as I like to call him... The Trapmaker. This is going to be interesting....

CaptainArchmage I added you to the list.

Obviously we all need to spend some time to play with the features and see what's different but does anyone have preferences for a time to start this up? I'm thinking 1-2 weeks still but real life may change that for some of you guys.
